Jtr header clearance?
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:41:42 PM »
Prepping the engine bay right now. Using a samberg kit with a ls into the fd, do I need to bang anything for the headers to clear?

I want to do it before I paint. Info or pics would help

You should only need to bang the tunnel, not the firewall. No need to worry about it looking a bit shabby down there.

I have a lowered fd and have wanted to get a pair of jtr headers. Can anyone tell me how much lower than the chassis headers hang? Or a photo of the ground clearance will help. Thanks

Both sides?

Results may vary, but I think it's usually just passenger side. You might just want to do what I did and install everything, then rip it all back out for paint. Sucks, but it will make for a cleaner install (less bumping around) next time around. You don't want to have the engine 95% in then realize that the subframe has to be drilled slightly to fit.

I had to bang the driver side quite a bit. Barley had to touch the passenger.

Oops, I meant to say it's usually just the driver side.

Are you guys trying to install them from the top or bottom? My engine is already in and I'll be damned if I'm going to pull it again to bang my tranny tunnel

Generally speaking anything under a 25" ride height and your gonna have to worry about speed bumps and such.  My car is set at 25" and I have to crawl over most bumps.  The V bands will take most of the hits followed by the lower tubes on both sides.

Depends on your kit. Hinson LS1 kit + JTR headers have always been installed from the bottom as far as I know (put the front of the car WAY in the air). I don't think it's possible to get them in from the top. Hinson LS2 kit + Hinson LT headers = impossible with the engine in the car.

Thanks Troux, I'm using Samberg's kit (LS2 block) w/ 1 3/4" JTRs. It seems like they'll ALMOST go in from the top but it's just barely too tight.

Driver side from bottom. Had to massage a little for it to fit.
Passenger side from bottom. I removed the starter and engine mount for this one. No massaging needed.
wazzaaaaaaaaaaaapppppp!

Does anyone have any pictures of how much massage work was needed on the drivers side?
