I am the one doing a roof swap right now. I have a 94 touring it had a glass sunroof. I hate sunroofs,t-tops and convertibles. That's why I am doing the roof swap. As far as weight I would bet the sunroof cassette and sunroof weight  at least 30 pounds. The roof panel and brace need was cheap like $145 for both. Local Mazda dealer had it in stock

I don't think I could lose any more weight, I'm pretty slim, tipping in at 150lbs.  The weight is high, and I"m thinking I could remove maybe 10 lbs if I completely remove everything.   I've never removed my headliner so I'm not sure whats really up there though as far as tracks and driprails for the sunroof go.

My car was 2897 last time on the scales.

Kevin, headliner removal is easy, just take your time.   :)    Almost all of the weight is in the sunroof motor assembly, it contains the drip rails, tracks, motor, etc. all in one big unit that drops out with 6-8 bolts.    I would wager that there is more than 10 lbs in that assembly that could go away if you just made a bracket to mount the sunroof skin in place.

Seems like a lot of work for 10 pounds. I would do it if I hated sunroofs and had to have a hard top but otherwise its just not worth it. Get the carbon panel from Ronin and fix it in place with some brackets and I bet you will be within 2 pounds of a stock hard top.

I think Ronin should make a sunroof plug for the FC and FD, I really want to get rid of my sunroof in my FC. I should be able to knock off 30 pounds between the whole sunroof mechanism, panel, and wiring.

I'd imagine a plug would be easier to make compared to the carbon sunroof panel, and come out lighter also.

How far are you on that thing anyway?  We were talking about going to the track the other night and it made me think of your car and wanting to see it running  :D

Thanks guys.  Does anyone have a pic of a roof with a sunroof?  I know mine has one, but with how my roll bar is welded in touching the headliner, I'm pretty sure removal of it will be a destructive process, and once its out, its not going back in.  I want to make sure whats all up there before I go destroying my headliner only to find out there isn't much to gain.  10 lbs isn't much, but its the highest point of the car and should help get the CG down lower.

I plan to weld a piece of sheetmetal to my roof, mostly to gain headroom and I may shed a few pounds in the process. But that won't happen until I get it painted.

I have my (sunroof) FD's interior apart and the sunroof out right now. If no one gets a pic of the roof up by Friday, I will take some shots. I'll also weigh the whole sunroof assembly since its just sitting next to the car.

It would be excellent if someone came up with a quality cover for the sunroof hole(specifically carbon fiber). If nobody does, I think I'll just cut a piece aluminum or stainless sheet metal to cover the hole, run weatherstripping around the edge and bolt or rivet it to the roof.

12secondscooby,

That would be great if you could snap some pics and weight the entire assembly!
