SuperSlow's slow FC build
« on: February 02, 2011, 02:36:48 PM »
Ive had the car since August. It used to belong to my best friend until the apex seals blew so i bought it off him for $1k. It will be setup for straight line racing (drag for now and mile events a little later). Goal is to be able to beat higher powered cars from a dig or roll on the street.

Setup as of now:
Stock '98 Ls1 ~100k mi, rod bolts, springs and ported ls6 oil pump
Stock t56
Granny's kit
Mcleod "B&B" style street twin
Taurus fan
Ebay 24x12x4" intercooler
TC78 turbo (havent gotten there yet but already have the turbo waiting)
Competition Engineering ladder bars
Narrowed 8.8
325/50/15 ET streets

On the trailer about to leave my buddy's house.

Her new home.

Rotary just before tear down

Ugly engine bay.

Picked up the ls1/t56 off c-list for $3200 with all accessories and harness.

As of now the engine/trans is in as well as the radiator/fan and intercooler. Frame rails are relocated, tubs are all cut out, I'm working on getting the rear end hung now. Ill post more pics once they upload.

Cleaned up a bit before sanding.

Little rust I had to take care of.

Radiator support cut out.

New radiator support.

No more cancer.

First coat sanded down. Used rustoleum flat black.

Looking nice and purdy.

Granny's sent me the wrong k-member (non power steering instead of power steering version) and like a dummy I thought it would just take a little grinding.... Wish i would have sent it back before grinding on it instead because it was a somewhat of a pita.

Would have been much easier had I not used the 1/4" steel leftover from my dad's jeep but free metal is free metal.

Motor in but tranny was hitting the tunnel.

Tried to keep it as small as possible so the carpet would fit over just fine.

Tranny up and mounted now.

Radiator and tire mocked.

Intercooler mounted

Intercooler mounts, these things are solid as hell.

Fan mounted

Upper radiator mount. Im very happy with the way this turned out, radiator doesnt move one bit!

Bumper cover cut for intercooler.

Hole for the top half to catch air.

Very clean work. I have one concern though. Did you reinforce that square piece that you cut out of the mount? I don't think I saw anything in the pics.

Thanks guys, like I said I'm really happy with the way the front end turned out.

Wannnabefast, do you mean the square part at the front of the mount? Their aren't any gussets or any extra reinforcements on the inside. Its welded solid on 2 sides and partially on one side so it should hold. Im not real happy with how it turned out and definitely plan on keeping an eye on it.

I'll post pics of the rear frame rail relocation and such soon.

Nice work. I wish I would have seen pics of how you mounted that radiator before I made my mounts. I like how you keep it simple, and the upper mount also serves as the ducting? It looks fucking sweet, and this thing is gonna be a beast! I can't believe that intercooler is such a tight fit in that bumper. Update!

Thanks for the kind words!

Yep, the upper radiator mount also serves as a duct  :).

Ill put some pics up soon. Originally I had the rear frame rails at stock height but then found I wouldn't be able to lower the car as much as I would like so I had to re-relocate them lol.

I'm working on getting the cross member in for the ladder bars right now but i haven't really had a lot of time to work on it.

Hey I like that Radiator setup! do you have a part number for the radiator? It looks like a near perfect fit up front.

Thanks! Here is a link:

There is about 1"-1.5" of space between the frame rails and fits perfectly as far as height.

How are you getting those 325's to fit in the back? I see ladder bars and narrowed 9" listed. Does that mean a full hack half or are you mini tubbing it? pics please

Rear sub frame

The ladder bars will have to come into the cab in order to get the car to sit low enough.  Its going to limit how far back I can move the seat but I should be fine.

325 fits nicely.

This is about where I hope to have the ride height in the rear when its all done. With the tire at that height I'll have about 3" of ground clearance from the cross member so I should be good as long as I can keep the exhaust tucked up.

I'm working on getting the cross member in right now, after that I'll get the axle hung. I've never really done anything like this so its been a slow process, but I'll be sure and keep this thread up  to date.

Now that school is out I have been able to make some progress. All the rear suspension is in except for the anti-roll bar which I will have mounted next time a get a full day to work on the car. Heres a couple pics...

After I get everything welded up nice the rear will be sent off to moser to be shortened and stuffed with axles. Then I'll do a little more chassis stiffening and start on the tubs.
