Fuel pumps and radiator fans w/holley wiring help!
« on: July 30, 2024, 02:28:42 PM »
Hey all, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction... here's what I have

Gen4 ls twin turbo

Holley terminator x

Radium surge tank with three aem 340lph pumps and one lift pump.

Four total radiator fans. Two spal fans (38amp/12v) and two fans that d
Aren't as strong (I don't know stats)

So I have 4 fuel pumps and 4 fans total.  I have two outputs I'll use from the holley harness (3 radiator fans run together and one a/c fan), and the regular fuel pump output (green wire) for all fuel pumps.

Would I be OK to just run 8 relays (leash electronics, etc.) Or should the fans and/or pumps be run through a module (Fore fc3 pump controller, etc.) Or a combination of both?

Thanks folks!
-John

1. You can just use relays, yes.   You don't need 8 of them if you use larger amp rating relays.
2. Module is up to you, do you have a reason for using one?
3. Is there not enough outputs to split up the pumps?   Running 3x 340LPH all the time on the street is going to make for some HOT fuel most likely.  If you could stage the pumps, you'd induce a lot less heat in the system.

Correct... I'm out of outputs. I was thinking of running a controller for the fuel pumps so they aren't all running all the time. Maybe have two run all the time and have the third kick on with a pressure switch.

I'll also offer that this depends a little bit on which rad fans you have. SPAL's most powerful fans will burn out if they stay running for more than about 45 minutes or so, so it depends a lot on your use case and specific parts as well as how much you care about the insane amount of noise you could potentially produce with all this stuff.

Like was pointed out above, three 340LPH pumps is a crazy amount of fuel and will be noisy and hot as all hell.

You can definitely run all of this stuff on a handful of directly triggered relays but it would come with a lot of downsides. I set up my termX to run a solid state relay and slow my pumps way down at low RPM as a possible fuel heat solution and it worked but it also turned out fuel heat wasn't my actual problem and I abandoned that.

Thank y'all for the input! I'm looking into a vapor worx fuel pump controller that will kick on the additional pumps as needed so they aren't always running full speed at all times.

Attached is the info for the spal fans. It's sounding like I might need a controller for the fans too so I don't burn them up.

I also PWM my pump and my cooling fans, to keep them both quieter and cooler/longer lived.

On my Mustang I have a brushless fuel pump which has PWM capability in the controller, and I use a GM PWM fan controller.   On my Aston I have a brushed (Hellcat) pump run off a GM Fuel Pump Module and a Chevy Volt (SPAL) brushless fan set that has PWM built into it.

In all cases I control them with the ECU (Nexus R5/PDM16 on the Mustang, OEM C7 Corvette ECU on the Aston Martin).

These aren't the SPAL fans that will burn out quickly, the ones I have are 1600 CFM (pn 30102800), PWR recommended them but warned me that they can't be at full rip too long.

One possible solution for fans - this is what I use to create a low speed/high speed function with two fans. You can wire one of these together yourself if you feel like it, it essentially uses the two relays to put the fans in series for low speed (i.e., running 6-7 volts each) and in parallel (full 12-14v) for high speed.

I'm curious how you have four fans in use at once for your car? If you're using two of them as pushers you are probably doing more harm than good.

Thanks for the info! I'm running three individual fans because I'm running three smaller radiators with a puller fan on each.

Awesome front end setup! I'm super jealous of all that cooling.

I've had good luck PWM'ing brushed fans and fuel pumps with the Dorman 902-310 relay. It takes a 128hz PWM signal from the ECU. I've heard they're rated at 40A, but I don't know if I'd push that for something running full out like a fan. I had one for each fan on a Ford Contour dual fan setup, and one per AEM 400lph in a surge tank. All 4 have been on the car since 2018 with no issues.

Thank you so much!  I'll check it out! It's good to know that it's going good six years later.

And yeah, lots of cooling, lol. I'm in South Carolina, and I want to be able to drive the car to road course events and beat on it without worrying about overheating.

No, I made them. The ones that came with the kit didn't fit well.
