Anyone swap 6th gear on magnum? by kinger on 04 Mar, 2024 09:59

Looking to possibly swap my 6th 0.63 gear for the 0.50 gear in my Magnum close ratio trans. From what I gather its in the tail section so access is easy, but I see a lot of people really struggling to pull the gear off and install the new gear, like snapping jaw pullers, etc. Is this something that I should just take the entire trans to a shop and see if they can swap it? Is there a removable part of the the 5th and 6th gear, and reverse area I could remove and then take that to a shop?
Just curious if anyone has done it.
Thanks!

I’ve pulled that gear off a few transmissions. It needs a good puller but isn’t that bad.

How about getting the new one back on? Needs a press? Tail section just unbolts and you have access to it right? -

I had my Magnum apart a few years ago to replace 2nd gear synchros. Pulling the 5/6th require a LONG gear puller. IIRC, I used a big 3-jaw and made extensions to the "bars" from the screw body to the puller arms with 1/8" steel bar stock. I also used bigass hose clamps to keep the jaws engaged on the gears.
I reassemble, I believe I heated up the gears with a torch a little, then used a piece of pipe and a rubber mallet to drive it back home.
Take good pictures of everything while taking it apart and organize everything in the order and orientation it comes off. I laid out papertowls down my entire bench and laid all parts face-up in order of removal.
Also, the T56 online manuals aren't the same as the T56 Magnum. It's much closer to a TR6060, besides the rear housing being different. -

When I was looking at getting a magnum that was the first thing I wanted to do. Tick seems to sell the driven and driving 6th gears. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

I just used a pipe and mallet to drive it back into place. No issues in any of the transmissions I’ve reworked.

Sounds good, so technically possible in my garage if needed. I was looking at that same 6th gear set to it would be both drive and driven gears. Thanks!!
