Longest road trip in RX7?
« on: February 28, 2024, 04:32:44 PM »
What is your guys longest road trip in the 7 and for what purpose?  I have put so few miles on mine, thinking of selling, waffling back and forth... now I am thinking of a solo road trip 3000+ miles to clear my head, see some country, and do it in a car that is absolutely amazing.  Maybe swing by friends houses I would have never thought I would drive to.

Iowa to Montana, Idaho, Colorado, and back.   :drive:

What is your cruising rpm to get that?  I am not even close. Barely 20mpg really trying. Maybe my 434 would be better as it’s so much more efficient than my 383???

Right on.

Missoula is fun but the roads in town are shit for a lowered RX-7. Most roads in Montana are subpar at best.....winter destroys them and summer construction is everywhere.

Should be a fun road trip. Stay on the I-90 the whole way and the drive should be tolerable.

I wish my RX-7 was long road trip worthy but I have made it too much of a Sunday cruiser now and  can only take it on certain roads. I am my own worst enemy.

I did a road trip that ended up around 2000miles, it was right after the swap too. The mpg in 6th on the highway combined with the light weight was pretty stellar on the wallet filling up.

If I remember your 383 setup correctly, it was far from optimized.
This was on the LS1. It was a very optimized setup. Mamo heads(not the as cast 220s). 12:1 compression. Ported fast 102 intake. 225/227-115+4 cam. About 440whp. Quench was .030". The quench pads could never build carbon with how tight it was. Pretty much perfect with no contact. .5 6th and 3.55 rear. Iirc freeway at 70mph was under 1500.
Internal ring friction and dynamic compression ratio are important. This engine was 8.96:1. Most of the time 8.5:1 is about the limit on 93 but my quench being so tight allowed the extra almost .5.
Mind you, this was 430 miles non stop except for gas at constant speed. My 2010 Lexus ls460 did NOLA to San Antonio (620miles) on single a tank and it only took 1 extra gallon.

I did several trips of a few hundred miles on my forged 5.7 in the FC.   30+ MPG highway on gasoline, close to that on E85/flex.

6 speed + 3.08 gears though.   It idled at 55 MPH in 6th…

I did the hot rod power tour in mine.  Brought tools and fluids (oil/power steering).  Nerve racking for the first few days as I didn't have it together long, but then settled in.

Do you have cruise control? I don't, and did a 2,000 mile trip home in mine when I bought it. The strain of trying to keep the throttle pedal very still on the interstate highways made my leg cramp. V8 + small aerodynamic car means tiny pedal movements caused fairly big changes in speed. I ended up using a stick as a hand throttle for most of the last 1K miles to give my leg a break.

Haven't done a long trip since, and won't until I get cruise installed.

Never thought about the road conditions, good point!

You are correct the current ls is not any where close to what you had, that is cool, I bet my 434 will be super easy on fuel, and I definitely need to swap my 6th gear to a 0.5.

Yes!!  I added it within the first year.  Too many long straight roads here and same thing with my foot.
