Gen 4 knock sensors into Gen 3 block - Good place?
« on: February 15, 2024, 11:06:55 AM »
With my mutt of a engine being that I got 58X reductor, but its a LS1 MID block.  Anyone have a good location where to drill and tap the gen 4 knock sensors into a gen 3 block which originally had them in the valley cover?   I understand the wiring and such say if I went with a Maxxecu it only comes with dual Gen 4 sensors so curious what the options would be to for this block.

Basic searching I see people mounting them on the block "wherever" they can, however I am looking for a little more technical info if it applies knowing the sensors are freq based, it was a major pain in my Motec Snowmobile knock sensor addition to calibrate it for false knock omitted.

If it doesn't matter that is ok too.  Just curious from the IQ of this site.  I don't trust a lot of what I see elsewhere.  Thanks!

I installed mine where they belong on gen 4 blocks.  Instead of taping the block, I used a die on the sensors themselves.  Worked out perfectly, just take your time.  I was thinking of the future possibilities, and didn’t want to ruin the block.

It's not ideal but you can use one of the spare engine mount bosses. You'll just have to play with the gain of the sensors a little bit since they will favor the front of the engine.

A die on the sensor?  Sorry not following this.  Is there a place on the gen 3 block where the gen 4 sensor can go, I thought it was all different webbing on the side of the block but I don't have them side by side to compare.

Sorry I’m loosing it.  I installed gen 3 sensors on a gen 4 block.  So now you have a gen 3 block and you want to use gen 4 sensors… why?  If you’re going with the maxx ecu, can’t you run any knock sensor you want?  I thought the stand alone ecus give you those options.  Use gen 3 knock sensors.

Also, I’m sure you can find a tapped hole on the block that you’re not using and drill and tap it to the right size for the sensors.

The terminated harness comes with gen 4 knock sensor wiring not gen 3, I suppose I can always wire up a gen 3 if needed, just curious if this was as easy as drill and tap.

@Exidous is probably right, pick a new spot on the block and adjust sensitivity which is easy to do.

I am not doing anything yet just scheming still.

You can run and sensor you like but the newer Bosch with the hole in the middle are much better than the single wire valley units in the gen 3s.

Sounds good, thanks again!

Do you not have the pads on the block where the Gen4 knock sensors mount?  I have the same situation and am currently running without knock sensors, but I thought when I first got my engine installed, the pads on the block that are normally drilled and tapped for Gen4 knock sensors exist on the older blocks still.
