Oil for AC compressor and charging R12 by kinger on 11 Sep, 2023 10:23

Hello all,
The V7 AC compressor snapped the shaft inside in a clean break (common problem). Replaced it and blew out the lines and system is 100% clean. My question is around the AC oil. I have mineral oil which is what I need for my R12 system (this is not a 134a car). The compressor came pre-oiled with like a ester oil which is compatible with both R12 and R134a. How much oil should I add and should I add it to the lines directly by removing the schrader valve or through the gage manifold set? I have it on vacuum and it's been holding fine for days. I did also replace the drier.
Here is what I was thinking:
Add 1 oz to high side pressure line by removing the schrader valve, and drawing a vacuum from the low pressure side. Reinstall the schrader valve and then vacuum it over night again. Finally charge it with R12.
OR
Just pull off the yellow middle supply line from the manifold throw 1 oz down there, then charge with the R12 hoping it grabs the oil as it goes into the system.
What is your preferred method? -

You need to know the volume of oil in the compressor.
Since you've cleared the lines, I'd stick with the oil type that's already in the new compressor.
It should come with documentation stating how much additional oil to add based on refrigerant capacity of the system.
I've always added the oil to the high pressure line at the condenser, which allows the oil to aerate before getting back to the compressor.
Then pull a new vacuum from the low pressure fitting and charge the system as normal. -

Thanks Cobra! I am having a heck of a time with the adaptors mainly, I have 134A adaptor to R12 but there is 2 schrader valves in there, so I started pulling those valves out to limit it to just 1 valve, and I think I am finally making some progress. I thought it was holding vacuum fine but I think it was just doing the line to the car, I don't think it was pulling anything from the car, so I think I am getting it now. My system takes 5 oz of mineral oil. The compressor came with new ester oil so I dont think I will add any, they are within a 1/2 oz.
