FD Colilover Opinions
« on: April 08, 2023, 11:43:10 AM »
   Hi,

My suspension is tired. I don't have a coilover setup right now, but I am probably going to move forward with one as it seems like what everyone is doing. I'm curious to see what people are running and their thoughts on them. Favorite brands etc.

       Thanks!

What kind of driving will you primarily be doing in the FD?

Ohlins are a popular choice for a mix of comfort, street friendly compliance and still good for hitting the track at times. With their spring rate options you can get something more refined for your driving style. I will be switching to them myself if I cannot get my current ones rebuilt.

I'll be doing 90% street. Eventually I'll do auto crossing but that's not for a while. I don't think I'll ever track it again. I think those days are over for me. I'm not sure I have it in me anymore. I'll check out the Ohlins. I don't even know where people are getting their parts these days lol.

I love my Ohlins. The spring rate is great and they still ride very well. Top Choice in my opinion.

What spring rates are most people getting with the ohlins?

I have heard so many people say ohlins are good over the years. Makes me wish I had got them I stead of my BC racing. For no other reason than fomo really :)

I've used D2 CoilOvers on Both My Daily Driven FD RX-7s and No Issues or Problems at All.

One thing I will Add - And this is My Opinion and Experience - You Dont have to Agree with me - But I am just putting it out there.

I Feel that for the Most Part - The CoilOvers are Pretty Much All the Same - You are Basically Adjusting Your Ride Height.  And All CoilOvers can give you that.

Ride quality across coilover brands is VASTLY different.    Tuning, spring rates, how well they're matched, etc is huge.   Not to mention quality of components, etc.

The engineering that goes into Ohlins, KW, etc. is why they cost so much.   It's also how they can handle well and still have ride quality.   Budget coilovers (BC Racing, etc.) have come a LONG way, but the gap is still pretty big to the top stuff.

For those getting custom spring rates on their Ohlins, where are you ordering them from? any sponsorship options out there?

Sakebomb Garage charges quite a bit more when you order anything but the base DFV FD setup. It would be nice to get something with higher spring rates or helper springs for those with cage setups or doing more track oriented setups.

Swift are great. Take motion ratio into account though. An 11k front is equal to a 9.6k rear. The standard 11k/11k will feel a little rough in the back.

IIRC the front is .68 and the rear is .6.
