Pick up 22 Raptor - after waiting 6 months
« on: May 02, 2022, 12:46:57 PM »
I had a Gen 2, ordered this one in Oct, just got it last week.  Really cool truck!  Its much different then Gen3 despite the engine being the same.

Couple new cool things:
1.  Exhaust!  Finally nailed it on these ecoboosts with the equal length header and adjustable valve.  Sounds like a Ford GT no lie:
https://youtube.com/shorts/2XMewVG_kos?feature=share
2.  I forescaned it hacked the Anti-Glare headlights - HUGE game changer.  Who da thunk Headlights can be better:
https://youtu.be/nzeFzQe-oe0
3.  Coil over rear is soooo much smoother, actually surprised its still a solid axle feels more independant
4.  Finally can adjust steering feel, shocks, exhaust, and driving mode all independantly and save your favorite under the R button.  Get in tap R twice and all settings go to what you want. I actually like riding in offroad mode on the shocks, truck feels like a pillow.   Sport will stiffen them up for cornering and I can out corner my tires.  Really cool
5.  Lane keeping is different then lane centering and I hate lane centering but love lane keeping.  LK is like a little nudge if you drift over the lines, like the truck is saying hey man I got you..
6.  Welcome lighting when you walk near it, it lights up all around the truck welcoming you to not trip and fall LOL  I just need to hack it to unlock the doors at the same time!
7.  More power - I know I know its rated the same but it appears it really underrated and has a mild tune in it with Gen3 dynoing over 30hp and 105 ft lbs tq MORE then Gen 2.  Plenty of zip!  0-60 <5 seconds, I may not even tune this one.

Overall worth the wait, huge improvement from Gen2.

The new Raptors definitely sound way better. It's interesting to see OEMs tuning the secondary lengths to improve engine sound. BMW did the same on the new M3/4, where one downpipe is convoluted to match the length of the shorter pipe. Equal secondary lengths are also why Corvettes and Camaros sound so much better than Silverados with their dumb crossover pipe exhaust.

I know right!  There is a loop in the pass side to make it longer to match the drivers side crossover.  It sounds amazing and I like quiet mode is whisper quiet but normal and sport have a nice bark.  Baja mode with a double paddle tap downshift coming up to a stop...gets people turning heads HAHA.

I like those trucks a lot!  100 ft/lbs extra is huge from the factory.  I'm curious what kind of fuel economy it would get going 70mph and actually not beating on it.

I have over 2000 miles already.  It gets a real 17mpg on the highway.  Now I am on 35's and lightweight 35's saving 20 lbs each wheel, so stock probably a little less.  MPG doesn't matter to me, except I was all over TRX and a guy has one gets 9, yes 9.  No thanks.  The exhaust is addictive, in sport mode it will pop and burble on downshifts loud enough people turn heads coming to a stop, and on upshifts make the craziest sound between gears, like a pop I think, google ford GT sounds and I am not joking it sounds nearly identical.  Every EB motor needs equal length headers!

Overall I am averaging 14.5 mpg town/hwy but I have not been nice to it, mash the gas nearly every opportunity.  I am impressed with that compared to how I drive.  In fact my 7 is still in storage because I just love the Raptor so much.   :-[

Almost 3000 miles couple more thoughts.

1 - Already in the shop for a bad O2 sensor, repaired and been fine since.
2- Lane centering, lane keeping, and trailer sway control need to be shut off to tow safely and stress free
3- Towing in a crosswind sucks with my 23' V nose enclosed hauling a 4 seat rzr.  Scary, going to have to add sway bars for the first time in my towing experience.  The truck crab walks where you have to steer in the same direction as the wind not steering INTO the wind like I am used too.
4- with a 2lb wrist weight on the wheel you can set cruise and take hands and eyes off the road and it does decent at driving itself.  It will speed up slow down, and steer.  Its good for long drives when you just need to relax your brain for 10-30 seconds.  Be careful when the lines disappear on the road (say on a exit) it will veer, so use with caution.
5- Auto stop when you come to a stop it sets the brake for you until you tap the gas, thought I would hate it and I love it.  Lets you take your foot off the brake and relax it, works good on long lights.
6- Power tailgate up/down FTW!  So nice!
7- Infotainment is still glitchy just like every other new FORD.  So annoying, wireless carplay sucks so much juice that even on the charging pad built into the truck it drains.  I stopped using it and the Pandora app, I just use bluetooth and it works fine.  Although it did power off while driving randomly   ::)

IMO its better in every way then a Gen 2.  Although I am still not crazy for the orange/red color.  I wanted more orange then red and its more red then orange unless its a bright sunny day.

Sweet! Would love to own one but they are too $$$ for my blood.

So you only get 17 mpg on the highway??

My cammed 6.2 L9H in my 2012 Sierra Denali gets 17.5 highway up here in Montana and that is on a terrain that is far from flat (west side of the state). Now granted I have tuned it myself and it's very efficient but still, I would have thought Ford could have squeezed out a wee bit more MPG.

I drive at work a 2020 F350 with the 6.7 powerstroke. Torque monster but it only averages 14.3 MPG....pretty shitty for a diesel.

That's disappointing.  My 2001 F250 7.3 can get 20mpg on the highway.  Probably would do 16-18 in everyday driving.

I had the exact same denali in the exact same conditions as my Raptor now...15mpg was best i could do.  Avg more more like 13-15mpg with that truck.

Bummer on diesels I was debating going with one, I was hoping you could get 20+ with one like the old days.

I am considering getting the Tahoe with the baby 3.0 duramax.  Apparently it gets close to 30mpg on the highway and makes like 500 or 600 ft-lbs of torque.

I'll believe it when I see it!  haha

Ford as the same thing 3L and so far people locally are getting 18-20mpg.  They are not real happy.  Especially when rated at 20/27

I think Ford discontinued it last year.

About 6000 miles, mainly towing the 23' enclosed trailer with the rzr as its summer time riding in WI time and the 7 gets daily duty for work.

I added a sway bar kit and it helped a lot.  Still not great above 70 mph in a cross wind but better.  Also adjusted my hitch to help level the trailer a little bit better as it was slightly higher in the front then the rear.  Maringal improvement if any.  I think next step would be E rated tires if I was going to tow a lot more.  I just like the cush from my C load range 35's.

Truck has no issues after the O2 swap.  Runs flawless, still sounds badass, and I got a new iphone 13 pro and it seems to do wireless carplay just fine compared to the 10 I had.  Towing I get 6-8 mpg again in crazy midwest winds, and empty I can still touch 16-17mpg without trying to hard.  If I really beat on it maybe 14-15.  The truck does best at like 58 mph it will get nearly 20 there, but man I can't drive that slow.  On interstate its a 2mpg hit going from 70mph to 75 mph so this last trip was the first I went 71mph, my slowest ever on a interstate towing.  It just drove better at that speed in the 20-30mph cross winds we had.

I will say I think they are worth every penny.  I paid less the retail and already had private offers for $10k over retail lol.  I think it will hold its value well and be extremely functional and just a blast to drive while I own it.  My last Raptor I paid $63K and got $64k on trade 3 years later and 71K miles.  This one I paid $73k for and have a $10K bank loan, my lowest since High School LOL  Sort of fun!  I never pay cash for cars it's too easy to use the free money and my investments are making me way more right now.  I wont say this truck is free but it's awfully easy on the wallet to own.

Hope it helps anyone thinking of one.  The 23 allocations open in 2 months and you will probably wait 6 months or more, but I would say its worth it.

I can't believe you like the c rated tires, my d rated tires didn't do that great towing.  I actually switched to narrower E rated all terrains (34") on the avalanche and it tows my enclosed good.  I have a sway bar/load leveling kit as well, but I am slightly higher in the front still.  I could always add air bags on mine if I wanted to be more level.

I wish I could upgrade to a Raptor, but we just bought a new Highlander
