reverse light wiring for swapped rx8
« on: October 07, 2021, 01:09:29 AM »
Im in the middle of swapping an ecoboost 4 cylinder (its basically a Mazda L engine with a ford head) into a 2010 Rx8. My Rx8 was originally auto and Im stumped on how to get the reverse lights working since Ive removed the auto trans transmission/range switch/etc in favor of a manual (rx8 trans with a bellhousing adapter I designed). On the rx8 the transmission wiring is a part of the engine harness, which I obviously wont have.

Id imagine someone here has swapped a manual into an auto FD so its a good enough place for me to start as any.

surely the reverse lights arent PCM controlled somehow (will not be using the rx8 PCM - I have a canbus convertor cooked up).

I feel like I'm over thinking this and it's probably some simple way. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I've never seen one, but I assume the RX8 manual trans has a reverse switch with 2 terminals. Run switched 12V to one terminal of the switch, run a wire from the other terminal to the reverse lights, ground the other side of the reverse lights. Done.

I don't have the wiring diagrams for an RX8 but should  basically be what Cholmes said.   You will need to get a hold of the wiring connector for the reverse lights from a Manual RX8 with a bit of the wires left on it then basically do what Cholmes said.

Should be about as straight forward as mentioned above.

The RX8 engine and body harness are somewhat merged.  The bulk of the engine harness that is easily removed will be at connector X-18 at the right front of the engine bay in the box that houses the ecu and steering computer.  Unless you are wiring the car from scratch, the wires you need for reverse will be in the portion of the harness shared by the body.  Grab the B/Y and R/Y from there and extend to the reverse switch.  Or if you un-loom the harness to eliminate the remaining unused wiring you can pull those wires back to the firewall which gives enough length to run directly to the reverse switch.
The RX8 MT reverse switch uses Sumitomo/Yazaki Armlock 250 connectors which are just locking spade connectors. You shouldn't need the specific connector as a normal spade terminal will work.  But, if you want the correct connectors and terminals look here: https://www.corsa-technic.com/item.php?item_id=835&category_id=124
