Aye, an RC shouldn't have an issue netting the same or similar result.

So can this mod be done using the stock alternator or is that not advisable?

I think that would depend on if you need a fast turn at idle.

If you are using something like an Escalade  DR44 you should be fine.

Why would someone need fast turn at idle?

A quick search shows the DR44 come sin 145 and 160amp versions. Are you referring to the 160amp version?

Auto X is an example.

Yes. 160A it's self exciting but only to 13.3v or so without modification.

The following is in reference to the DR37 and DR44 alternators when not hooked up to a sourve voltage signal. They work by receiving a PWM signal from the ECM/BCM.

“Without using an external regulator, the alternator will default to a 13.8V limp mode which is only a 60% duty cycle! This may work in some light duty applications but if you want the alternator to charge the battery to its full potential, you will need an external regulator.”

So in a sense they might be self-exciting to run in limp mode, but not to their normal function. I originally used the DR44 without a voltage signal, and it would not charge my battery correctly. I use an odyssey pc1200, and they will not efficiently charge at system voltages under 14 volts. I installed an aftermarket self-exciting 14.4V voltage regulator in my DR44 alternator, and it is working great.

I just bought a FC manual rack and  Saturn Vue power column/assembly and plan to retrofit my own EPAS setup. The $950 pricetag was a bit more than I wanted to pay, but I can appreciate how much work it'll be to merge the two columns, make dash mounts, and package the motor where it won't ruin the footwell.

I currently have a Sweet (brand) Nascar PS pump, Turn-One reducer, and 3-port FC rack, but I'd like to make some engine bay room for bigger turbos in the the future. Also, the slop in the quill of FC PS pumps has always annoyed me and I've never had good self-centering, even with up to 7* of caster.

I was in a similar boat but using a lithium starter battery seemed to piss the self exiting regulators off. I use a stock alternator now and send it the signal it wants.

Side note the pwm duty is inverted. Lower duty is higher voltage. 128Hz for anyone curious.
