OEM Power Steering Pump Kit Development Thread
« on: November 24, 2020, 11:11:23 PM »
Hello!

I am working on a kit to allow the OEM power steering pump to be used (hopefully!).  I have a couple of designs in progress, and I am doing some 3D printed prototypes to verify fitment before machining parts.  The goals for this kit are:

  • Compatible with all three pulleys offsets - Truck/5th gen Camaro, F-body, and CTSV/Corvette (more on this below)
  • Fully bolt-on
  • Reservoir included
  • All hoses included
  • All hardware included
  • Billet aluminum bracket(s) and spacers, anodized
  • Compatible with "flipped" DBW throttle bodies (if there is demand)

Now, I need some input.  If you are interested, can you tell me what pulley offset you are running, and whether or not you have a flipped DBW throttle body?  This will determine how the kit is designed.

I have two designs pending at the moment.

Design #1 uses an off the shelf baffled reservoir, but it will not work with CTSV/Vette spacing or flipped DBW throttle bodies.  It also has a suction line routing that is maybe a little less than ideal.

Design #2 has a custom made reservoir and is a little less "compact".  But it can theoretically be made to work with all pulley offsets AND flipped throttle bodies.  It is also a direct mount reservoir so there would be no hoses on the suction side.

Either design will require a custom pulley to make the CTSV/Vette pulley spacing work.  So unless there is substantial interest in that, it's probably not going to happen.

Thoughts and comments welcome!

I'm interested and I'm running f-body spacing.

Neat! When I first did my PS, I had a handful of guys hit me up for a or so I think there is a market. The biggest challenge I saw and you see seeing is there are multiple offsets. Makes it tricky.

This is BY FAR the best setup! Trust me, I’ve had about all other options.

Hey Andrew! Nice to see you on here.

This looks like an awesome option, if I hadn't already invested in my TurnOne setup I'd be all over this! To anyone considering this, I've purchased a few of Andrew's parts and they've been top notch with great communication to match, you won't be disappointed.

Yeah, its been a game changer for me.  Its accurate to within 0.5mm, sometimes better.  I'm excited to see if the new iPhone 12 with lidar opens any new doors.

Thanks for the compliments!

I don't expect to sell many of these, but its something I wanted to do for my car for a while now and I figured it would be a good winter project!  I currently have a Turnone pump as well, and I don't love the heavy steering at low speeds.

The OEM FD pump is "engine RPM sensing", and begins to taper off at 1,300 RPM and levels off at 5,000 RPM (engine speed).

This is why I want to go with an electric pump, so I can make it variable assist  based on road speed.

When you say all hoses included - for which chassis or are they more or less the same?

Is this FD only?  One consideration for the FC guys is having both 2 and 3 port racks (3 was for a speed sensitive setup).  I'm not enough of an expert to tell you if the pumps are different.  I tried a few versions as well (Vette ported and F-body with cut springs) before I finally settled on the Turn One pump.  That's been the hot ticket for me, but I applaud what you're doing.   You might consider an option for a cooler if you're reworking lines anyways.

I'm running a bog standard LS3 DBW(unflipped) w/ fbody accessories and am very interested. I don't really have any advice, or design commentary. I just want to buy it.

Sorry for the radio silence!  I started a project to remodel part of my shop and add a storage closet...which morphed into all new lighting, ceiling speakers, a large wash tub...yadda yadda.

Anyway I am still planning to make this happen and all of the feedback is helpful!  I have some new designs that I haven't posted yet and I am still investigating the feasibility of making it work with Corvette accessories.  As much as I like the black "off the shelf" reservoir and inboard reservoir location that I have shown in previous images, it doesn't allow for the best suction hose routing - see the big "U" shape hose.  So in order to keep the design elegant and compact, and keep the cost down, I think I will be fabricating the reservoir as well (vented, and baffled) and putting it in the inboard location but feeding the pump with a line that runs above the pump.  I just need to see if I can satisfy all other requirements of hood clearance, reservoir capacity, cost, multiple offsets, etc. with this new design.   Flipped DBW throttle bodies won't be compatible but that doesn't sound like it will be an issue for many...plus I fundamentally object to flipped throttle bodies so ha!

As with all of my products, the primary goal for me is to fulfill my own needs, and then see if others are interested .  Since I own an FD and don't have access to an FC, or an FC pump/rack, I don't plan on going that route.

I was planning to at least include the pressure hose as an optional add-on.  But again, it would only be guaranteed to fit the FD so if someone wanted to use the FD pump on their FC, they would also need to be the guinea pig to test the line fitment.  In reality though the hardest part about making your own lines is finding the correct fittings, so step 1 for me will be doing some research to see if I can find out if the same banjo fitting will work on the FC rack as the FD.
