Any ME's want a job in Hawaii? Open posting
« on: March 02, 2020, 05:24:29 PM »
Hey y'all,

Just wanted to pass the word that the Keck Observatory where I work has a mechanical engineering position open if anyone is interested.  Living on the Big Island has been a great move for me my family and I'd sure love to get another engineer who's also a hands on gearhead in the door.  Yes, you'll miss killer Mexican food, yes cost of living is high (not Oahu high but still).  The upside is that we're based in a small town with awesome community.  It's legitimately interesting work.  The Big Island is pretty much an outdoors paradise.  Job comes with 4 weeks vacation and in general work life balance kicks ass.  Local beach for reference.

I still can't get over the turquoise water and the black sky at night.  Waimea is a bit upcountry but still only 20 min from the beach.  Plenty of winding roads and autocross/drag strip in Hilo for motorsports.  Tons of 4x4 things to do too.  Anyways, info here if you want to scope it out.

I didn't realize that's what you were doing in Hawaii - I'm the wrong kind of E but man that's cool as hell

oh man that sounds nice.  I don't think I could convince the wife to move to Hawaii though.  I am an ME for Rolls-Royce currently but also have a Physics degree, would likely be a good fit.

Wrong E here too but I specialize in RF. Been doing it for the military for 16 years. I used to be stationed on Oahu and visited Mauna Kea numerous times. Loved the Big Island.

My cousin is an ME but I don't think he'd move to Hawaii.

I read the job description and I hit a lot of the bullets.  I have a BS in Applied Physics with a focus in Astrophysics and a BS in ME which I currently use.  Too bad I just bought a new house, in Indianapolis, and haven't sold my current home yet.  Plus my wife is the bread winner and her job is the important one haha.  If this was in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina I would apply!   Hopefully someone from the group will fit the bill.

I'm out of the country for work this week but will absolutely apply once I've had a chance to update my resume this weekend. I have a BSME and a my work experience fits the job description well. When my wife and I visited the big island 2 years ago, we both came back wishing we could move there full time. This would literally be a dream come true.

My son just this weekend finalized his enrollment into Missouri S&T aimed at a ME degree, and will be starting school in August. While this holds no bearing on what you're recruiting for at the moment, I'm truly amazed at what lays ahead for him.

Side note, just got a notification that he was accepted into the Honor's Academy..
