If you like the cold, Google/Boston Dynamics in Massachusetts would hire you in a heart beat! They are, desperately, looking for people with your resume.
Im pretty sure it would be cool to work on these beasts lol

Pretty impressive little robots, particularly how they handle unexpected inputs, but I'm CERTAIN I wouldn't move to MA for any amount of money.  BBBRRRRRRRR!!!

I was going to say something similar.  If you like borderline commie states with tax policies that make you want to puke take a look at CT.  UTC is on a massive engineering hiring spree to gear up for Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan production (a few thousand new engineers of various disciplines in the next 3 years).  Lockheed is also picking up lots of engineers via sikorsky.  We also have hundreds of ancillary engineering firms here catering the P&W as well as GE.  I recently made the move into aerospace engineering and couldn't be happier.

just food for thought...

As far as Georgia, I think blake covered it well...BBQ!, nuff' said.

I never could understand why high tech companies don't ALL move to low tax, low cost of living states, where they could hire engineers and techs for less money, have a lot less regulatory headaches to deal with, and they'd have a higher standard of living to boot.

I've been lucky to always have good employment here in VA, but it would sure help if there were more options for the kids growing up today.  As it is, most will have to leave the area to find decent work.   :(

Talent pool.   High tax areas are nice to live in, typically.   That's why they cost so much, because they can.  ;)

I can't find engineers to save my life at work.   We interviewed 140 people, hired 4, and lost all of them to competition paying higher salary because the 4 we found were on higher cost of living places and get paid based on rate where I live.

Hell, I couldn't stand living in one of those "nice" places.
On my commute, if traffic slows to 55MPH I consider it a traffic jam.
Seems that every time I travel through a major city I get stuck in miles of backed up traffic.
If I had to put up with that every day I'd probably kill someone once a damn month.  :punch:

I can also shoot machine guns in my back yard without anyone calling the cops, and my noisy toys don't bother the neighbors at all.   8)
I travel all over for work, and see a lot of nice places, but when I get back home I realize that I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Joel,

I didn't know that you were working for Textron.  I worked for them at the Cushman facility in Lincoln, NE when I was in college.  I mainly worked on the turf trucks.  They closed that facility and moved it to Augusta, GA.  I knew some guys that took the move opportunity, but many decided to stay (some work with me now).  It sounds like you have a lot of upside opportunity by the move.  Yes, it will be more hot and humid in the summer, but I wouldn't consider it that cold in the winter.  Moving away from Ronin would definitely be a pain, but you could run that like an east-coast office.  Living closer to Charlie would definitely be fun though...

Good luck with any of your choices.  Be happy that you have such great options to choose from.

Bill Lackey moved to SoCal and is the director of sales at an automation company (robotics) based out of Orange County.  If you want to be put in touch with him he does want mechanical engineering backgrounds for new hires.

Bill has his EE and ME.  He is a smart dude!

FWIW I have moved around a bit ever since I graduated high school.  When I moved this last time from St. Louis to Baton Rouge I was not thrilled at all!  My wife cried for 2 years.  Then one day she woke up and realized she actually likes living away from family.  We moved for a better quality of life with each other and kids.  Baton Rouge is nothing to brag about and neither is Augusta outside of the Masters.  It turned out to be the best thing that could've ever happened to us.  GOD worked out the details.

We are blessed to make enough money to be able to visit places we want to and keep our sanity but still come back to an amazing lifestyle with each other and our kids.  If we hadn't trusted GOD and stayed where we were we would have never experienced the last 9 years of what I would consider the absolute best years of our lives.  Seeing the good in it didn't happen overnight though.

For all you know your dream job and life could be waiting for you there.  The greatest thing about Augusta is all the amazing places and things to do within a half a day drive.  There are so many beautiful parts of the mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee that will take your breath away, many lakes for boating (you could have a summer cabin), and beaches and beach communities that are quaint and very family friendly with a different vibe than what you've been used to.  On top of that I fly to the Masters every year so we can meet up for lunch.

The truth is that both staying or moving will have its fair share of obstacles and differences for both you and your wife, the kids are resilient. It's like an adventure for them when they're young.  The greatest thing about moving away from everything and everyone you know is that it allows your relationship with your wife and kids to grow into something that can't happen when you have your normal distractions.  When you move away all you have is each other!  I told my wife that a long time ago when we were making our move and I know that to be the absolute truth even more now than I did 9 years ago.

The good thing is GOD will be with you and your family wherever you end up.  I'll be praying for you man!  Keep us posted

Thanks for the kind words all.

In other news.  Textron just announced they're buying Arctic Cat.  So to my mind that's the death knell of Augusta based powersports (unless they close Arctic Cat's plant and consolidate that to Augusta too).  More likely is that some of engineering would ship up to Minnesota instead.  Either way, I don't really want to spend my life building golf cars, so that has my preference being to look local.

First steps either way is to start a job hunt as at a minimum I need a comparison vs. an Augusta offer (for which the formal offers are starting to distribute this week).

If I lived in sunny so-cal there's no way I'd ever move!

Although the 3 car garage would make me act a bit selfish.   :secret:

Screw the family and their feelings, did you see all the room for activities?
