SBF pan? double sump, rear sump ?
« on: January 11, 2017, 02:48:52 PM »
I am in middle of 5.0 swap to FC... the double sump pan it came with took a hit from a rock or the front sway bar. either way my question is ... Is there any other pan style I can use to clear steering rack better? For example would a rear sump moroso style pan clear and make room in the rear? is it a bad idea?

The problem with the SBF is the oil pump is in the front sump with very little room around it.  The front area on a rear sump pan is still the same depth as the double sump to clear the pump.

So would I be able to put my sway bar in its properly intended place?without having to bump on the front sump?

You're going to have to relocate the sway bar, or build a custom one. I think a member on here has had one made before, but I don't remember who it was.

The problem with the ford engine is that the oil pump and pick up sits in the front of the oil pan. Its driven by the distributor and there is no real way of changing that without making significant modifications to the inside of the engine. The dual sump is probably the most appropriate pan as the other ones would be too deep, OR not allow it to fit since the pan will be too deep and the center section will hit the sub frame of the vehicle.

Find or build a relocation kit.
Find a custom sway bar builder.
Find an OEM sway bar from another vehicle and make it fit.

I have a buddy who can help me make a bar, but as a family active duty person my schedule is always up in the air...
I have an 02 Mazda Protege5 wagon, its aftermarket sway bar links..

..look like they will extend my bar out further safely and outta the way of the pan and k member...its like 3x longer than the FC, this is the route I will take first, like you suggested. Worst case it doesn't work/fit and I throw it on my wagon...thanks for input
