Electric power steering
« on: December 15, 2016, 05:46:19 PM »
I deleted power steering on my FD for the turbo, I don't like the way it feels without it so I am looking at doing full electric power steering. I know the MR2 pump works but I would like to try something a bit different. The power steering in a Saturn Vue is full electric and goes on the steering shaft. I have seen a few old school cars use them but I am not sure if it will fit in a FD or not. Has anyone tried this or am I going to be the first? I plan to try this as soon as I am finished building my new garage.

Vue's are definitely full electric. A lot available cheap because of timing chain and A/T trouble. It would be interesting to see one done.

I have a Vue based system in my '65 Mustang project.   It's not on the road yet, but the system is built.   The motor is pretty big but I'm sure you could fit it under an FD dash.

What drives the vue unit for ECU, etc is it all self enclosed?  Curious what does the unit weigh?

It is all self contained, the Ecu is connected to it. There is a guy making a controller for it to adjust the sensitivity of the power assist. I just picked up a power steering unit last week from the junk yard for 20 bucks. If I can make this work I will have less than 100 bucks into my power steering.

Keep us updated.  I have been looking into this lately myself.  I am a bit hesitant to buy the assembly because I would need to import it and I fear that it may not fit under the dash, especially since I have a wildwood pedal box and AC tubes (and mine is RHD, but that probably shouldn't make a difference for this).  Please take lots of pics when you are working this out.
