New exhaust. Not impressed on the whole. Have a few questions
« on: December 12, 2016, 02:35:36 PM »
I finally got my exhaust back from the shop. This has been an necessarily stressful experience, but I won't go in to that here.

I would just like to know from you welding guys, if I should have expected the exhaust to have been back purged when welded or if that is only from top notch builders?

Here's some pics:

Well that makes me feel a little better. I am trying to decide if I should ask for a refund (due to numerous other issues) or just teach myself to weld and fix it myself.

That looks pretty amateurish to me. Hand control is pretty meh and I see some post-weld grinding.

The sugaring on the interior would be my only concern. A weld doesn't have to be pretty as long as it has the proper penetration and strength. Sugaring has a tendency to be very brittle. If it holds great but if not I hope the shop will repair it for you. I've tried not back purging or using solar flux B. Really back purging is the only right way to do SS.

Not backpurged, and not great quality.  However, you asked for a SS exhaust and that's what they gave you.  Unless you asked for back purging (or it was promised in conversation), back purging is not something that would "normally" be done.

Did you do any up front due diligence on the shop?  If they fulfilled their commitments and you can't point to a requirement that's not being met, saying that you're "dissatisfied" mostly points to a misalignment of expectations, unfortunately.

Now if you were shown example work and a "reasonable person" would say that what you got wasn't in line with what you we lead to expect, that's a different story.  It doesn't hurt to ask, but I don't think there's much to be done.  I agree with the assessment above that it's mostly cosmetic, so that's the good news.  Headers, yes, I'd be a stickler on back purging and quality welds.  Exhaust pipes are such large diameters that it won't make much difference.

Thanks for the replies. Back purging was never mentioned and I didn't know if it's standard procedure or not.

The only real thing I've got in my favour on this that the back box is in contact with the rear valance in two places so it's to fit for purpose.

I haven't spoken to the fabricator yet, so this information will help me "tone" my complaint.

Contact with the body is certainly getting to the point where a "reasonable person" (that's the test of law here in the States) would say this isn't right...

It's like if you buy a new boat and it leaks, the contract doesn't have to say the boat shall be leak free for a "reasonable person" to expect that.

Go for and see what they can do for you.

You had to bring up leaky boats...

depends on whether you took it to a fab shop or an exhaust shop.
honestly that's pretty damn good work to come from an exhaust shop, but i'd be pissed if it came from a fab shop.
In high school when i had my lowered S10 I had a generic exhaust shop modify my y pipe for me so i don't drag it on the ground.
they didn't even take the pipe off the truck, goobered some boogers on the bottomside and "sealed" the top with some sort of epoxy or something that burned off over time.

Id be pissed if that was my exhaust but the saying you get what you pay is true with this kind of work.  If you dont mind me asking what did you pay?  The welding is pardon my french complete shit but sadly if you went to a typical exhaust shop that is what you get.  All the work I do is fully back purged buffed prepped ect.. its very time consuming to put in the detail to make a nice piece. I would be around 2k to build what you have so if you didnt spend nearly that much than I can understand the work.  If you went to a reputable place and payed good $$$ then I would be livid with what you got.

It was £600. Its really pissed me off. I know I am going to basically get the whole thing redone at some point as the ground clearance near the transmission is shocking.

A full custom made SS Exhaust all tig and installed for $600, I would not complain if it was not back purged.

Compare it to this which is not custom at all.

Actually it was GBP600 which is about $750 US.  (I hadn't looked at that exchange rate lately, I wish it was that good last time I went to England.  I think it was about 2.2 USD back then.)
