Input on FC LED headlights
« on: November 08, 2016, 12:37:04 PM »
I just found these LED lights and the price seems cheap, the size at 6.2 inches wide seems close enough, and they have excellent reviews. I am thinking of mounting these behind the FTP lenses and using them as headlights. They are in a metal waterproof housing, and are 18W, which seems about right to replace a 50-60W sealed beam headlight.

Should I get spot or flood beam?

This might be an easy way to pull 10+ lbs off the front of the car. I rarely use the headlights anyway. Thoughts?

From what I've read, the "spot" beam is most similar to what OEM head lights cast. I haven't seen them on an FC, but a friend has them on an S13. The light pattern is okay, but the single mounting stud makes them very bouncy on a stiff car.

I converted my standard popups to LED a couple years ago using glass 7x5" H4 housings (same fitment as OEM), and H4 CREE LED dual-beam replacement bulbs. I believe the whole setup cost me under $200 and is WAY WAY better than halogen sealed beams. I adjusted them to where the stock lights cast and I never get flashed for blinding oncoming traffic. The housings have a DOT stamp but I'm 99% sure the bulbs are sketchy.
Best part is, it still retains HI/LO beams and is a factory plug and play. Literally no extra wiring.

Here's a comparison between the LEDs and halogens.

FWIW, I bought an Shine FC2000 bumper and will be selling my LEDs this winter if you're interested.

I wouldn't expect to be able to drive faster than 30mph safely with those lights. I have a similar setup for an auxiliary reverse lights on my truck and they are not that bright.
They'll work good for DRLs I'm sure.
there is no cutoff so even with a spot pattern they'll be glaring at everyone.

Without cut offs I think you'll blind a lot of folks throwing light every which way unless you really point the spots downward, but that compromises the potential of throwing light down the road.

I have those for auxiliary lights, they have no cutoff, and the flood pattern ones don't have much useful range

I did exactly what you're describing, but haven't put the juice to them yet.  Don't plan on street driving, but need them to be class legal.  I used some Amazon cheapies.
