Wheel fitment, help me find my next wheels!
« on: October 26, 2016, 07:11:35 PM »
Hey guys iv been running a set of Borbet 16" wheels since I got it and the tires are going bad so im looking to grab a new set from craigslist.

So I need to know what size offset ect will fit. Im looking for 17" or 18" wheels with a bit of lip.

So my cars specs-

Cut front springs
Lowering rear springs
Struts (not coilovers)

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on wheels im a wheel virgin at this point. Just looking for what wheel tire and offset you guys run!

Thanks!

Thinking about looking at these but then again I have no idea what will fit.

They are 38 offset im guessing that's not enough

Forgot to post my current setup

They are 16"x7 I think 30 offset can't find much about them. They have 295x40r16 up front and 205x40r16 in the back with 1" spacers taking it from 5x114 to 5x120

8 inch wheels with +25-30 offset will work in the front. If it fits on the front it will fit the back.

295/40R16 and 205/40R16 refers to tire sizes.

295 and 205 refer to the width of tires in millimeters.
40 is the aspect ratio of the tire, more simply is the sidewall height
16 refers to the wheel diameter. 16" in tires can only fit 16" rims.

5x114 and 5x120 are lug patterns, different cars, different lug patterns. Our cars are 5x114. Your example is incorrect as adding a 1" spacer does not take the lug pattern from 5x114 to 5x120. Adding spacers will affect the offset of the wheels.

That's just some basic info, see this thread for more information on wheels

I think he means he has lug pattern change adapters so he can run 5x120 wheels.

PlusOne, he could be running adapter spacers to change the lug pattern.   :secret:

That said, the sizes the OP posted still don't make a great deal of sense.

A 295/40r16 would be 295 mm wide.  That's clearly not what's in the picture above as the tire would be 4.5" wider than a 16x7 rim.
A 205/40r16 is an incredibly short tire.  Diameter = 16 in + 2 * (205 mm * 0.40) = ~22.5".  That doesn't look like the picture either...  Normally folks run tires a roughly 25" tall tire on FCs.  For instance, 255/40r17s are a good fit in back.

Since you're looking at starting over with a new set of wheels and tires, here's about the simplest easy fitment FC setup known to man.

225/45r17s on 17x8+35 front wheels (stock 5 x 114.3 bolt pattern).   Might lower the offset to +30 since you still have factory coils, can't remember how big an influence that is.
255/40r17s on 17x9+35 rear wheels (same 5 x 114.3)

Should fit well, tires nice and square, same diameter front/rear (wider tire has a lower aspect ratio) plenty of options etc.  Side note on lug patterns: 5 x 114.3 is the correct pattern.  Some wheels are advertised as 5x114 (which is probably lazy but actually a 114.3) or 5x115 which is supposedly different and distinct.   Don't cheat.  Stick to those advertised as properly 114.3 to be safe (the 0.3 is needed because this is works out exactly to a 5x4.5" pattern which is what we have)
LS2 stroker FC, Mandeville big brakes, widebody, etc

Oh yep 295's would be a sight on a 7" wide wheel. Mine are 205's in the rear. The 9 and 0 are right next to one another on my phone.

And yep again I know they are 5x114.3 or 5x4.5" its all the same and the spacers I have are really 5x4.75" not 5x120 but 5x4.75" is really 5x120.65 but they still work with the German 5x120 wheels. 1/2 a mm really who is counting?

Yep I know my tire sizes pretty well its the wheel im worried about since that decides where the tire sits.

So positive offset means the wheel mounts closer to the outside of the wheel like a front wheel drive car ect.

Then negative offset would add lip to the outside like all these guys running around with wide body kits.

Anyway I get under the car and took a rough guess with a tape measure and I came up with 20mm offset including the spacer which makes sense. Then looking at getting a 8" wheel with 38mm offset it would move the wheel in 31mm closer to the spring and move it 5mm closer to the inside of the car from the fender line.

I think I have about 1.5" or 38mm from my current wheel to the spring which would be close but should work. Also the larger wheel will mean it would be closer up the strut which with the angle its at might mean a bit more room.

Did any of that sound right?
