Mazda Repu swap possibilities, lets discuss.
« on: April 20, 2016, 01:33:26 PM »
Sooo I am looking at picking up a REPU soon. Last year i was out of state working and caught myself a DUI and soooo I offloaded what I had, which included my FD(long story, lonnnggggg but it was the best thing to do at the time).
It was already swapped and I was going to do it over, correctly this time. Alas I sold everything. All I have left over is the extra forged LS1 I picked up and some miscellaneous things.

Which fast forwards me to now. Instead of picking up another FD my eyes are pretty set on a REPU. I've already been in contact and went out to see one a couple weeks ago. I think the idea is pretty burned into my head now. I also now have a buddy that will loan me his garage, so just setting a couple other things in motion on  my end. I was set on putting the LS1 into it, but I also just picked up another daily, a '09 cobalt ss/tc. It has a catback, KO4+@26psi (stock turbo larger impeller, I will double check once I am in there again.), CAI, and an upgraded intercooler. And this little puppy pulls. Still haven't taken it to the dyno yet, but planning on it.

So I've been looking at info on the ecotec 2.0's and see basically with stock internals 550whp is the limit. I've put a consideration into doing a 2.0 LNF swap instead.
The power curve for the ecotecs is no slouch and they make nice torque.....So with that what do guys think. Is there another engine you would consider swapping.

LS1 engine weight: 400ish
LNF 2.0 weight      : 300ish (plus about 50-75 for turbo stuff)

Dimensions:   LS1                LNF

width:            510mm          642mm
length:           730mm?        665mm

I've been thinking about the accessories also, it would be nice to have p/s, a/c, heat etc. The other thing is I want it to have a turbo so I can make pshhhh sounds all day. With LS1 it would be a tight fit it seems, the LNF i feel could do it easier. Of course I could rear mount the turbo.......

Basically the goal would be the first 2 digits of the 1/4 mile involving a "1" followed by a "0". I am just weighing the powerplant possibilities now. Any other suggestions? Or thoughts?

So in addition. I have more to discuss on the two, just didn't want to write a book. But essentially LNF 2.0 mated to a T5, or LS1/t56 are the current options.

The turbo 4 would honestly be a better suited setup if you want it to handle well and haul some ass.   If you wanna just flat out book, the LS will make a ton of power.  That's my old motor right?  It ought to make 400+ RWHP N/A, let alone once you pressurize it.

If you go with the LNF contact Speedfab about his VTEC mod for those motors, it'll make your head spin.

That sounds insane, LNF would be really cool in that truck and I think suits the attitude of it better.  Sounds like a fun project

Yes Blake it is your old motor.

It doesn't seem to be much of a weight savings between the two. That is only at least naturally aspirated ls1 to turbo lnf. But the difference will be made when you throw turbo stuff into the mix for the ls.

Yeah this truck had a ton of cancer but has a good 13b just needs the brakes redone. But if all goes good I should be getting it soon. Maybe this weekend.

Subtle and great restraint in letting it marinate out there for a while.  Nicely played sir.

Soo I ended up snagging a Repu in Boise and towing her back to Portland. No brakes not running with a 20r sitting in there.
Initially I just wanted to get her running and stopping, of course now the plans had changed......

I ended up getting her running by swapping a rebuilt weber 32/36 on there , fixing some wiring/installing alternator and battery, cheapo electric fuel pump.

Then I went into the brakes.......trust me this is a pain. I found some decent rotors off of an old junked b1800 but no good calipers the ones on there were fine.
I then ordered all new cyclinders, drums, shoes etc for the rear of off Rock auto. Everything from rotors to drums were seized. Even ordered new wheel bearings. Proceeded with the drums first then replaced everything and come back around to put the new drum on, no cigar.....Old drum good, new one no. Then I just added the other problems.

Whoever welded the motor mounts on, well surprised that they werent broken along with the motor only having one bolt each mount(not really since I am sure it never ran :yay:). The massive wiring issue, just sketchy, got it all working. Also the E brake cable snapped on me, the part that connects to the lever.....

So I have a short travel for work and the holiday seasons in Tow I may or may not have time, but ASAP i will pull the drivetrain/ wiring/ interior and start cracking at this next plan. Once I get progress in I will start a build thread

Its a 75, so after really putting this into a thought with even having an LS1 already I am going to go LNF mated most likely to a T56. There are more details, but I will update that once I start procuring said parts.

Why t56? I don't think the lnf bolts to the t56 without a custom bell housing. The newer 4cyl ecotec from the cadillac ats has the tr6060/3160 behind it, but the first rwd lnf setup came with an aisin transmission. It's supposed to be the newer version of Toyotas w58. IIRC.

The easiest option IMO would be to get a drop out from a 2006-2010 Pontiac solstice gxp or Saturn sky redline. It's already bolted together, then you just need to worry about fitting it in the repu.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think the LNF/t56 was a bolt on ordeal.

Unless you are going for big power, I think the aisin unit should hold for the most part.
