Thinking about trading my DD for Chevy SS
« on: August 24, 2015, 10:54:38 AM »
I currently have a 2012 300 SRT8, but it I am sick of the aftermarket for the mopars

I am in the market for a new car and I am seeing the 2015 SS's are coming down in price preparing for the 2016's.  I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about them.  I would plan on doing an LSA supercharger swap quite quickly after I sell the parts off my 300.

They're really nice cars.  A bit pricey for a Chevy, but nice.

I think the SRT 300 looks quite a bit better than the SS, but if you're constantly having problems I think the SS is a good option.

The SS will be more fun to drive, the 300 looks better though. If you want a manual trans, the SS is the only choice. The ease of supercharging it is a nice upside though.

I was looking at them pretty seriously a couple months ago.  Test drove a '15 automatic the same day as a '15 charger (was looking at scat pack, but they only had an r/t RT).  World of difference in the chassis, visibility, ergonomics, etc.  Handling and ride are incredible.  I thought driving it was actually more fun than the cts-V I drove, though those weren't on the same day.  The only downsides are styling, mpg, and the auto transmission isnt nearly as good as the ZF 8 speed.  MPG is poor, but probably not far from where  you're at.   I was surprised how much I could feel the difference in weight from the charger.

I was still seriously considering one but found out I'm going to Europe for a year.

Having owned American cars exclusively for the first 15 years of driving and my family always owning and driving domestics I can say that after a few experiences I found Japanese and German imports to have better fit, finish, reliability and durability in pretty much every way. The driving dynamics of say a BMW also was on another level. The paint always seemed like it held up to the sun and elements better as well.

I understand they are sometimes cost prohibitive but the used market is ripe with certified cars with excellent warranties and the resale is strong due to the excellent residual values. Depending on your location many performance imports come with all wheel drive like Subaru, BMW's Xdrive, Mercedes 4matic and Audi Quattro.

Just thought I would throw it out there in case you haven't considered it. Also the purchase and service experience is on a different level and I feel the customer service even after the sale is almost always excellent.

My experience with BMW is with a 435 M sport with X drive. It ran a 13.3@104 bone stock and they make an inhouse tune and the aftermarket is strong. A tune in these cars add 30%+ power and is only $500. They are comfortable and handle excellent, come standard with track ready brakes as well. Our BMW has 2 track days and a dozen or so 1/4 mile runs, is daily driven and have had just one minor issue taken care of by dealer in 2 years and 30k miles.

These cars come with a lot of caster so they feel rock solid on the highway at stupid speeds.

Good luck!

CTSV is too small, gotta fit my 3 kids in the back

I haven't test drove the SS yet, but everything I read says I handles like a much lighter car.  The MPG is less but you are right, it is very close to what I have now.

My 300 looks great! But I am kinda sick of Aftermarket and so on...  I will likely buy a tuner for the SS as soon as I sell some of my 300 parts and start buying pieces for the LSA supercharger.  I am planning on keeping it stock except the LSA for a while just in case I do need it to go in for warrenty purposes so it would be easy to yank it off if I really had too.  I am working crazy hours this week and I want to get a deal going this week and close on it Monday for the end of month numbers, they are trying to dump all the 2015's.

Here is a picture of my 300.

And here is the color I want for the SS

I hope you like it. I didn't realize that the SS had a bit more room in back than the CTS-v.

I hope so aswell, I am getting a brand new car for the price I paid for my 300 that was 2 years old with 20k miles.  The LSA is required to make me happy though, haha

If you can wait..

a note about end of month, and this *may* be different for different dealership, but the best time to buy is the last week of the year.
End of Quarter
End of Month
End of year

Thats the only time I will buy a car from a dealership (if I ever do) since you can typically rake them over the coals pretty good.

SS is badass, we had one at my sister GMC dealership..took it for a nice ride. It was an auto but still a very nicely put together vehicle. Granted it was damn near new so no idea on longevity but still..

Isnt the SS based off the new Caprice platform? That gives a ton of extra rear legroom for police duty, not sure if it transfers over to the SS though..only ever been in the drivers seat.

The Caprice is the long wheelbase version of the SS. I don't think you can get a Caprice as a "civilian" though.

SS is much bigger inside than the cts.  I felt cramped driving the CTS-V wagon.  Ss has much more back seat room, and better visibility.  You looking at auto or manual?

Also, pretty sure an SS would destroy a 435 around a track.  The '14 was 2 sec faster around willow than the old M3.  With way more room inside.  And lightly optioned 328i pricing.

I do like the way the 4 series gran coupes look though.  Even for a sleeper the SS is kinda dull.

The 435 matches and is slightly faster than the outgoing M3 depending on the track. I would not be surprised if the SS was quicker stock for stock but when comparing the cars strictly on instruments you miss where the BMW really outshines other cars.
Also a cheap tune will put it as fast or faster than the SS. I would rate the seats on the 435 M Sport as a 10 on a 1 to 10 scale. Even on the longest trips. But tastes differ and I can't fault you for wanting a LS3 daily driver :)

And a SS with a nearly drop on LSA blower would destroy the tuned 435... :yay: If you are just going to have a street bruiser and want some space inside, an American muscle sedan is hard to beat. If you want a refined driving experience, get something else.

Great driving dynamics are nice, but don't necessarily make a car faster on a track.. Case in point, a Mustang GT is about as fast around most tracks as an M3. We could probably all agree that the M3 is a better all around driving car.
