ford 302 swap information (distributor)
« on: July 02, 2015, 10:21:29 PM »
I just thought I would pass along a bit of information I discovered a couple of weeks ago. The motor I put in my 86 fc is a 302 that was a 5.0 fuel injected motor originally. What I discovered is when you take a fuel injected motor and carb it you have to use a long shaft distributor. The cheap (40 dollar) hei distributor was not a long shaft and I only had about 1/4" of oil pump rod engaged in the distributor and it was a real threat for oil pump failure. Now they sell a hei distributor with a longer shaft to solve that problem. They are basically the same except the longer shaft and a 80 dollar price tag.
Just thought someone might want to know what I found.

Just curious what you used for an ignition setup? I've been running the same swap for about a year now.

Right on, I used the ARP rod going up to my distributor which is out of an 86 mustang, motor is a 93. It turned out to be barely longer than the stock one but it engages the oil pump fine.
