How much power to beat a ZR1 corvette?
« on: May 05, 2015, 12:18:12 PM »
My car an FD is almost done, I should be hitting the dyno in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if I'm going to have enough to beat or keep up with a friend of mine in a stock C6 ZR1.  I'm estimating that my car should put down around 475-500rwhp.....Is it enough?

You'll need a little more to beat him.

A stock ZR1 makes 530-535 rwhp and is something like 3400 lbs.  I think at the top end you'll be neck and neck, but he's going to walk you in the midrange and anywhere wheel spin potentially comes into play.

Damit.... I have racelogic traction control, maybe it will help on the take off while he spins his tires.

He wont spin much.. he has traction control as well and larger sticky tires.

He told me he spins a lot, and his traction control sucks.  I'm running 295/30/18 ad048's so I should hook pretty hard on the take off.   I'm sure he's faster but I'm hoping I get close.

If you aren't beating him just fake a mishift a couple times. He'll heat soak after a couple runs  :D

Lol.....Yeah that's not my style, I like to loose with my pride intact.  The car is setup for road course but I like to drag race every once and a while.

500whp and A048's with Racelogic will be tough to beat with a stock ZR1, should be a driver's race.
The Corvette TC isn't amazing, but isn't total crap either, and that motor makes great mid-range... I'd be excited to see it.

Just for reference, I walked a C5 Z06 that made 30-40rwhp more than me (402rwhp FD vs ~445rwhp C5Z06). The ZR1 weights more than the C5 Z06 as well. It would be a close race and I think you have a fairly good chance to walk away depending on your final numbers. The FDs have the weight as well as the drag coefficient going for them against the factory Vettes. Make sure you have a maximum of a quarter tank of gas and you should have a 600 to a 700 lbs weight advantage.  :)

At some point it was also discussed on this forum that a ~600-650rwhp FD achieves the same speed at standing mile events as the 800-900rwhp Corvettes. I can't remember the exact numbers, but don't take the drag coefficient of these cars for granted  8)

Is this drag race from a complete stop, or is it a roll race type scenario.  If it's from a stop, you just need better tires and to be a better driver than him.  In my old car (435 rwhp) I took down countless cars at the drag strip with 100's more horsepower because the would cut 2.2 60' times and didn't know how to drive.  If you really want to beat him you'll want some ET Street Radials at minimum... or maybe some 555R's if you want to go budget.

^Matt you don't think the 295/30/18 A048's with Racelogic and close to 500rwhp will get me out of the hole fast enough?  It will be a drag race but it will probably go till about 150mph.....I think I'll get him out of the hole then he will catch me but won't pull away.  Maybe I'm optimistic.

its gonna be close. depends on how well your combo is optimized. as said, the Corvette has a better footprint and is a hammer in the midrange. if you have a max effort NA combo, you better have some cubes. everything else aside from the weight is pretty similar. im seeing 2900-3100 lbs as the average weight for a swapped FD which is lighter than the ZR1. thatll matter from the dig moreso than top end. it will be an interesting race.

Get the launch control set nicely and that should help.
I do love what I do!
