Cobra diff breather pipe - What did you do?
« on: December 29, 2014, 04:21:22 PM »
I am after pics of what your solution is. I have already taped the whole and fitted a barb and wondered if anyone has done anything special like a zig-zig pipe work or anything?

You can just run as long of a rubber tube as you can and fit a put a sintered bronze air tool filter in the end. Making a loop or J or zig zag will keep the gear oil from coming up and out of the pipe under normal driving conditions.

Ford also makes the "turkey baster" axle vent you can use as a small catch can with an integrated vent. You just have to figure out where to fit it under the car. It is around $20.

I ran a long hose towards the front of the car, across and then back to the subframe on the LHS with a steady rise all the way. It feeds through the subframe downwards and exists with a 90 through an existing hole directly onto a small filter that hovers just above the exhaust.

The original hose that ran into the chassis box section used to blow oil all over the place on track.

I'm going to give this a try. It's a stock vent breather attached to a 90° rubber extension on a piece of tubing.
If it's not long enough then I'll just lengthen the tube.

Keep an eye on that Don. In the FC, the diff almost sits against the trunk floor, so the jog up in your tubing will be reduced to almost parallel with the ground with that vent pointed up.

I like the turkey baster approach, makes sense. Maybe I can find a mini catch can or maybe make one from a tapered pot. Just needs to allow the air to burp I guess.

Do you have a part number on the stock vent breather?  I'd like to go the hose route as well, and don't feel like dropping the diff to tap the housing.

Stock Explorer/Cobra breather won't work as it sticks up above the diff. It is just a loop of tubing anyway.

Did the factory piece just press into a plastic bushing?

Yes.. It was a plastic bushing with a nipple. The nipple always breaks off.

That's what I was trying to find, the bushing with the nipple so I could put some flex tube off of it.

Ahh ok. Let me see of I can find it. At some point they switched to metal ones.

Awesome, thanks!  Haven't been able to find a parts breakdown that showed it.

Worst case you should be able to go to the dealer and order or buy it.

I'm on Fordparts.com now looking at the diagrams. It was plastic in 2002 and metal on 2004. Stupid Fordparts.com does not give you the full part number until they bill you, just the base part number, in this case 4022.

It is going to be some 4022 part number.. but that does not really help you as some of the 4022 diff vent parts are threaded for different cars.

10-4, thanks.  I'll have to see if any of my CCR brethren work at a dealership.
