Author Topic: Need *SAFE* creative ways to lift my FD high enough to put in headers.  (Read 4235 times)

My jack stands are maxed out and my drivers side header is the last thing I need to put it. I have no access to a lift. What I have is 4 jack stands and a floor jack. Any ideas?

Get a cheap hoist from harbor freight.

Go to Home depot. Get wood to put the jackstands on and use a block of wood on the jack to get the car higher. Buy a good quality hard wood.

Or get bigger jackstands.

How much higher do you need to go?

One time I built a wood A-frame and pulled a motor with a hand winch. Works good.

This is how I have my FD lifted higher. Just pay extra attention to the where the wood supports the car.

Like said above... Wood be your friend.  I'm not a fan of,maxing stands out either. I also use minimum of 6 stands.

2 years ago or so we had a local guy loose his life installing his trans alone with Jack stands, he pushed, car fell, and no one was around to help. Just be careful, most stands move around maxed out.

I was thinking about using wood as jackstand lifters but I thought it was just a crazy idea. I was told the JTR headers need about 19-24 inches of ground clearance.

This does not help you, but I got my Spoolin headers in my FC with just standard 2 ton jackstands.

My only advise is to not use cinder blocks.

I don't know what's available near you, but for lifting up heavy equipment on the farm I buy 8x8's and use a chainsaw and cut them into blocks. You can pretty much use as many as you want to lift whatever you want if you use your head about it. At the end of the day they aren't really cheap though. You're venturing into the zone of using your head rather than "weight ratings". Make sure its dam good and sturdy before you crawl underneath. Anything is cheaper than your life. Some big blocks of wood are stronger than any jackstand I've seen but that's just my opinion.

I have four 6x6 pieces of wood and also some 3x12 pieces of wood that had leg bolts holding them together to drive on also.

I bought a 4x6x8 and made blocks then used the floor jack as a 5th point. It went right in  :poke: :yay: :yay:. I found out ive got some clearance issues with my headers and oil block but its getting there

for future reference, just buy the big jack stands at harbor frieght. They are normally $40, and commonly go on sale for $20 a pair.  Ive got 4 of the big jack stands in my garage. I generally use the big ones on the lowest setting, which is must more stable than small ones on higher settings.
