RX7 FD LT1
« on: May 23, 2014, 03:58:20 PM »
Hello guys i didnt know where to start this thread and this might be kind of a dumb question for you guys, but i found a FD rx7 with a LT1 6speed in it for around 10k. Was just wondering if you guys thought that was a pretty decent deal or would you rather just prefer to have the rx7 with the rotary in it?

I think that's a pretty good deal if the car is in good shape and if the swap looks like it was executed properly.  A lot of guys on here don't like the LT1 but I have a soft spot for it since it was the 1st engine I ever swapped into an RX7.  The engine if stock should put around 280-300HP to the wheels on the dyno.  The "big" disadvanges of the LT1 is that it's a bit heavy and has a optispark distributer that is pretty sensative to moisture.  One bonus is that if it uses the kit I am thinking of (Granny's) it probably retains the stock hood AND steering rack location which means no bump steer correction.  Just curious is the car kind of goldish-orangish color?

Yeah i prefer the ls1 too but swap looks clean from pictures i've seen its a two tone orange and black. One reason i'm considering is because it isn't very far away from me. I'll post the CL link for you

Honestly, that looks like a really clean swap and nice car.  I would jump all over that for 10K.  The car looks to be "plasti-dipped" so be wary there might be some surprises beneath.

Also i thought the lt1's only had like 285 crank hp or something and the vette's lt1's had 300 crank hp? I do think the motor is basically stock on it though as well

I thought it was plasti-dipped too but he told me it has been wrapped and i asked how it was underneath and he said he didn't know that he bought it the way it sits. Has no AC or Heat and no Radio which isnt a huge deal for me

I don't know what GM rated them from the factory, I just said that number because my LT1/T56 FC put down 285hp essentially bone stock with headers and an intake...

I think it looks pretty decent.  I did just notice it's a salvage title though... might want to car fax that and try to figure out what happened...

Yeah i know the ls1 and lt1 respond well to the breather mods. I noticed that as well and i probably should do a carfax if i do buy it. I'm still debating on it. I don't know how quick the lt1 fd would be with motor being stock. I would guess low 13 1/4 mile but i have no real idea

I would guess mid-high 12's with a decent 60' time.  Looks to me like a decent R1 chassis.  If you find you absolutely hate the LT1, you can convert your T56 to LS1-style (input shaft, bellhousing, midplate) and then swap in an LS1.  You would probably have to change the exhaust too but you could probably get an LS1 in there for around $3000.

I would not even consider purchasing a LT1 powered car.

Why not purchase a lt1? My bro said hed rather have the rotary in the rx7 than the lt1 too. salvage title cars are harder to resell it seems.

LT4 heads and intake.

LT4 Hotcam kit from GM.

150 shot if you want it.

Easy 10's all day every day.

I'd be more worried about the salvage than the engine.

**Don't forget the later model vented optispark

Yeah the salvage title kinda scares me a little too. I told myself after i sold my Sti and found out it was a total loss vehicle that i wanted to buy a clear titled vehicle. But i wouldnt have known it was a total loss because i bought it with a Clear title no salvage no rebuilt title ran great no problems drove like a normal car. Only way i found out guy i sold it too got the title back and came back to him as a salvage title and i never knew it was in an accident when i bought it.
