I love the Pro touring style.
A great website all around but there is the mustang photo section for inspiration.

Blake, if you keep coming back to the fact that all these American muscle cars are huge, I'd really be looking to the Brits.  MGB, a widebody Healey Sprite, that kind of thing.  You've already done the big turbo and by all rights it looks like more of a PITA than it was really fun (not sure but how many control systems did you go through and never really get it sorted out?).  I now you ruled something out because there wasn't enough room under the hood, but still...  400 hp in a 2000 lb car sounds more fun than 600 hp in a 3000 lb car to my ears.

Given your skill with a welder I'd love to see you tube chassis something and that gets easier the less features you need (doors are overrated, that kind of thing).  I don't care if it's a rock crawler or a sports car, I just think it'd be rad.  The only other thing to consider is resale value.  If you pick a more valuable shell the end result is worth more.  Obvious, but have you considered frankensteining a wrecked DeTomssa Pantera or something more classic sports car than muscle car?

Joel,

I've looked at a lot of things, but I have to have 4 seats with reasonable back seat room since the whole point was to be able to take the whole family around in it.

That's the reason for an early Mustang.   The '65 coupe weighs 2500-2800 lbs, depending on options.   If I put an aluminum front subframe kit and an aluminum engine I should be able to keep it at 2800 lbs even with upgraded interior, sound deadening, transmission, etc.    That's pretty damn light.     I still want to go turbocharged, but much more mild in concept, probably 600 RWHP range.    I may say screw it and go ITBs on a big inch motor instead, but we'll see.   500 HP is just as good as 600 HP to me, really.

The British cars are just too small for me, unfortunately.

I would go for a 63 nova. They are also small and light.
I regret selling the convertible I had.

60's Nova II Blake! I have seen some sweet LSX powered ones in Super Chevy over the years. They are timeless especially when give modern subtle upgrades. They can look so damn clean when done right!
