ls3/ls7 maf hole cover
« on: May 09, 2014, 11:35:45 PM »
My friend with a 3d printer asked if I wanted to try printing something.  30 minutes of measuring the ls7 maf hole (miata uses the oem intake) with calipers, 30 minutes of programming the shape in openscad, and 30 minutes of printing time resulted in this.  I'm real happy with the way it turned out.  Made me consider getting a 3d printer.  I'll probably spray some plastidip on the outside to make it match the intake better.

PLA (PolyLactic Acid?) on a makerbot replicator 2.  I plasti-dipped the copy that didn't print right (bottom stuck to the plate and had to be peeled off) and it came out pretty good.  These were the "low-res" prototypes and aren't very dense.  The PLA is transparent and it's cool to see the internal structure.  Not much in there, but it's still pretty strong.

I'll make some more eventually.  My friend's printer is broken and my wallet isn't ready for a 2k+ purchase right now.

Need to play with temperature to get rid of the bottom curling, but here are some ABS printouts on the new printer.  I also have some bright green ABS and black PLA to try.

I have one green and one white that turned out pretty good.  Need just a tiny bit of sanding on the bottom to make them smoother.  Both out of ABS because I couldn't get the black PLA to work.  Probably need some hairspray or glue to keep it on the plate.  I test fit them on the oem ls7 intake and the samberg maf tube.  Just need to find a thin o-ring with ~1" ID at home depot this weekend.  Send me a PM if you want to try one.  The melting point of the ABS is around 230C (~450F) so it shouldn't be a problem in a hot engine bay, but it's up to you if you want to run it.  I drove to work and back today with one installed + ls7 maf gasket ... no issues.

Made one out of PLA and it came out pretty good.  A tiny bit of curling on the part that goes inside the intake.

Made a rollbar hangar for my steering wheel or helmet.  I wanted to see if the printer can handle small overhangs without supports.  Prints tend to be just a little smaller than the drawing (~1% I think) and I sized the holes for the nuts using the same measurements from my caliper.  They pressed in with some moderate force using one of those quick grip plastic hand vices.  Came out great.  I need to find some better bolts.  Maybe socket head.  There's a poorly lit video of the lower part being printed out.
