4l60e in a convertible
« on: April 20, 2014, 06:42:00 PM »
I have a 89 rx7 convertible and am putting a 5.3 in it with the automatic transmission behind it,can anyone give me a little insight on how to make the stock shifter work or do I have to go to a completely different setup to make this work, I know there's a lot of you out there that have done this and I'm a little lost on this and would like some help please!
Thx David

From what I have read on the forum the stock auto shifter will work with a little custom work massaging the detents and maybe adding one.  Doable.  I am guessing you have the stock RX7 auto shifter in the car.  If you don't and are converting from a manual RX7 to an auto Chevy you still can do it.  Others have.  But not with the manual RX7 shifter.

It would help to know whether your car is an auto or manual.  If the original shifter is an auto you are good to go in racing rules, if you are converting from a manual car to an auto there are rules to go by if you are racing it.

You can make a barn door fly with enough horsepower.

Retirement at last.  Wife's not happy, I bought a '66 Rustang instead of paying off my F150.

I took a stock FC auto shifter and ground another detent in it. Then welded a gm shifter cable attachment to the bottom of the FC shifter arm and used a GM shifter cable. Others have bent the arm over to the left side of the tunnel and made linkage from allthread and heim joints. It will work and get you by for now but I wished now I had just gone ahead and put in a B&M shifter and I wouldn't be doing it twice which is what I am fixing to do because I'm not happy with the stocker.

Truck 4l60e setup with all tread, bent shifter to the driver side and used a second short piece of all thread to hook up the heim joint.
