wickedrx7:  Would you be willing to trace your templates for the oil cooler ducting onto some poster board and mail them to me?
I'll cover postage and a few bucks for your time.
If so, PM me and I'll get you my address.

Thanks,
David

i would have done that for you but I really don't want to pull my front bumper off. Also, I doubt your cooler is in the same location as mine.

Thanks anyway.  I just figured you still had the cardboard templates.

I helped SakeBomb Garage finalize their cooler setup, and my cooler looks to be just slightly higher than yours.  I know I'd have to make some tweaks, but I figured yours would be a good starting point.

Thanks!  I am very happy with how they turned out.

I like the inserts too.  Have you considered pulling molds off yours and making a few sets for the rest of us?  :poke:

Another question.  Did you cut any openings in your inner fender to let air exit behind your cooler?
If so, where did you cut and how much area did you open up.  Pics would help as well.
I want to put the openings in the lowest pressure zone, just not sure what's happening with airflow inside the wheel-well.

I was hoping the opening toward the center of the car would be enough, but my oil temps still rise quite a bit in hot weather, especially if I'm running higher rpm's for some time.  :banghead:

There is a passage that runs over the fender liner and exits behind the wheel. Yes, the stock vent behind the wheel is actually functional.  But I didn't put any ducting behind the cooler so I think it should be getting pretty good air flow.  I do still see pretty high temps if I am really beating on it on the track.  It is directly related to RPM's, if I short shift at 5500, I can keep them below 260.  If I start shifting at 6300, they tend to rise to 280ish.  I am measuring temps at the oil cooler adapter as they are exiting the motor so this is the hottest point.

As for making the inserts for people, I really don't have any interest.  This really isn't my forte and I have too many projects already!

I did another track day at Blackhawk Farms this past weekend.  I was really happy with the way the car performed overall. I didn’t beat my PB but there was a ton of traffic so I really didn’t get to put together some really consistent laps.  Also, I wasn’t going all out on the straights to keep engine temps down.

Suspension Feedback:

Corner entry:  With the front suspension unloaded, turn in is great.  If I don’t unload the suspension, I don’t seem to have as much traction and the car seems to be fighting me a little.  I am down to 2 clicks on the ohlins in the front and every click seems to be helping.  Note- I am on stock front and rear sway bars.  My rear shocks are at 8 clicks.

Mid corner- Car feels good but has a slight tendency to understeer (without throttle input)

Corner exit- Feels good, pretty balanced and am able to get on the throttle pretty early.

Cooling systems issues -  I am seeing temps really rise.  Ambient was around 80 degrees and sunny and I was seeing 240-250 coolant temps and 250-270 oil temps after 4-5 hard laps.  I would then back off and let the temps drop.  One thing I am going to try is to run an undertray, there was a discussion of maybe there is a high pressure zone behind the radiator.

Option 1- There is a GB on the club for a replica mazdaspeed bumper.  This bumper has the largest openings and I feel will draw about 3 times the amount of air.

Option 2 – Design my own cooling/intake setup to replace Samberg setup.  I don’t feel his setup is robust enough for road tracking and I have some ideas to improve/enlarge the radiator.

Option 3- send Samberg radiator to Howe racing and ask if they can replace the core with one of theirs.  It is pretty well documented that the quality of  his cores is suspect so I think a good quality core could really help the situation.

Here are a few pics and trackside videos.  I have on-board that I will be cutting up and posting hopefully tonight….

Is the bottom of your front bumper open in front of your radiator? If so that is the source of your problem. The air is exiting the bumper before it goes through the radiator. I would not spend any money on more parts until you have all the air from the bumper opening ducted to go through the radiator.

Sounds like the car is running well. It looks great! Some larger sway bars will help you get the car balanced a bit better I would think.

It isn't open on the bottom and I sealed up the sides with my fiberglass inserts.  I thought the inserts along with the ducting on the oil cooler would help but they didn't make much of a difference.

You could have an air exit problem then. All the air out of the radiator is packing up under the hood and can't exit fast enough. You could try raising the back of the hood at the track and see if the temps drop at all, but a hood vent would be the best solution.

The Samberg radiator also leans back I believe which is not conducive to getting air evacuated either.

I've seen many many people chase their tails trying to throw parts at airflow problems with little success.

I have coolant under control on my car, but oil still can get up to 270 in the pan on a 100 degree day.
