FWIW after this thread started I got inspired and ended up throwing down for a variety of new tools including a Craftsman master "dual marked" (laser and stamped) socket set.  It was this one:

I was pleasantly surprised to find that all my new sockets are USA made.  If you do buy a big set, you'll want to do inventory.  They come in bags by type and I received three sockets I wasn't supposed (a six point that should have be 12), one without the laser etching, and one duplicate.  I was missing two.
LS2 stroker FC, Mandeville big brakes, widebody, etc

Craftsman Pro Tip - if you buy a set of Craftsman sockets, download the Contents List PDF for the socket set Joel mentioned above. It will help you fill in all the blanks and complete your set. Even if you buy some of the partial socket sets to add to what you have, you will still have a few gaps of sizes deemed "unpopular".

Also the complete Craftsman wrench set is available. This is every standard combination wrench Craftsman makes. It is a great value if you needs the larger sizes.
