Surface Prep For Dynamat
« on: February 12, 2014, 04:41:22 PM »
I bought a mega pack of dynamat xtreme to line my now oem sound deadening free floor boards and trunk. Now in the process of removing the SD there a bunch of nicks and scrapes where bare metal is exposed. Should i prime the whole floor board where the dynamat will go or just put the dynamat over it and be done with. I dont feel comfortable putting the dynamat over bare metal but if it will be ok because the adhesive on the dynamat i wont worry about it. Also in removing the stinger road kill the PO installed in the trunk he did not properly install the stuff and left pockets in the spare tire well now i have 2 fairly large rust holes fml....

I'm looking into this also.  Have you heard of lizard skin?  I'm concerned about weight and Dynamat is heavy!

I wouldn't put dynamat over bare metal. It would likely be fine because it would stick and seal it but a coat of primer is pretty easy to lay on and then you don't have to worry about it.

Don't do it!  Dynamat is so heavy and such a pita to get off. 0.02 from someone who's whole damn interior is wrapped in that stuff. Lizard skin or comparable are a much better bang for the buck weight wise. 65imp's build thread covers this in some good detail.

Also you both mentioned primer, primer will not seal you need to use some kind of paint. Things will rust right through primer.

Or use epoxy primer, that will seal it up.

+3? on the don't use dynamat. Previous owner dynamatted the whole interior and I hate him for it lol. I really wish I could just snap my fingers and have it all off. It is some SUPER sticky shit. You can put it on any surface that has been wiped down to remove dust and oil and it will stick.....forever.......

If someone has any tricks on how to remove it I'm all ears. Would love to por15/lizard skin the car.

FWIW, you do not need to Dynamat every inch of the interior.   Also, if you're looking at Dynamat, take a look at Raammat BXTII instead.  Much better stuff.

Weight is not a concern comfort and road noise is. Im tired of my leg and trans tunnel feeling like they are on fire. I want maximum sound deadening and tempature control. Im even droping the trans to design some heatsheilds with that expensive heat reflecting crap all through out the trans tunnel. Also looking at getting my stainless downpipes ceramic coated to further reduce in car temps. If not dynamat does lizard skin provide the same effect?

I have used sound deadening products in over 10 projects, and have changed my approach radically.
One big reason I sold my last FD chassis was because I layered the whole thing in dynamat (actually brownbread the better stuff)
and was disappointed in the result.  It is virtually impossible to remove and weighs a ton for limited effect.

My recc:
read this:
http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/

and use stuff from here:
http://store.secondskinaudio.com/firewall-liquid-thermal-barrier/

For an FD:
1 - remove factory crap (wish i would have done this- sounds like you are way ahead already)
2- for mass loading use a liquid; many like lizardskin.  On my FD I sprayed Spectrum Firewall on the external firewall surface, but ROLLED/TROWELED it in the wheelwells/inside/trans tunnel.  Use their thickening agent and you can make it like putty and layer it on thicker.  Once it dries it is quite light, easy to work, water clean-up with and very impressive in it's sound deadening ability.
3.  Use a closed cell foam of whatever thickness you want (I went with camping mats on my FD, and stuff from a local foam wholesaler on my Caddy)  and on top of that throw a layer of tin foil with 3m adhesive- try to minimize the holes.
3+:If you are really worried about heat substitute the closed cell foam/foil for one of the spectrum thermal mats on the inside central trans tunnel (I did).

4.  Then throw on your carpet.  make sure to seal areas like the tunnel with a trans tunnel plate so you don't have a volcano of hot air.

Or make the whole inside of your car look like a space shuttle and wonder why it is still loud/hot in a couple months.
