I have a sickness
« on: September 03, 2013, 05:05:19 AM »
So I have owned my 2008 Porsche Turbo (6 speed) for about a month now....I have the mod bug already and I am considering the following 4 options....what do you think?

1.  Mod the car with a tune and exhaust.  The car will be a little slower on the street and at "street" speeds because of my ability (or inability) to shift a 6 speed.

2.  Sell the car and get a similar 911 Turbo with a Tiptronic transmission.  This trans is more of a traditional torque converter transmission that can be built to handle high HP (although I will probably only go up to about 600awhp).

3.  Sell the car and get a slightly newer 911 Turbo with a PDK transmission.  This trans is a dual clutch manual transmission that cant be built (so far) to handle high HP (again I will probably only go up to about 600awhp which the trans can handle).

4.  Sell the car and get a Nissan GT-R.  I dont love the look of the GTR as much as the Porsche but I dont hate it either.  I could get one and mod it for what I could sell my Porsche for....they are stupid fast and even a horrible driver like me can drive it fast.  BUT it is still just a Nissan......

1.  Probably my choice.

2.  Autos (even sorta autos) are so much less fun.

3.  If you really just want to burn a butt load of money, haha.

4.  If you just want something that can handle 99% of what you run into, I'd say go for it.   The Porsche is infinitely cooler than the GTR though.

Speaking as a horrible driver (well, I'm a good driver, but I'm poor at launching and slow on shifts), I put an auto in my car to crutch that.    I put a stick back in, in the long run.

LOL

Blake its funny I did that (completely by accident).  I love the GT-Rs performance but it isn't as "pimp" as a Porsche.  It is probably out of the mix.  I love mine, just wish it was an auto for the 0-100 goodness

Run what u brung.

Unless you are like me and bore easily. Then buy whatever you think you can't live without at the moment.

Funny thing about "wanting" something. Once you possess it, by definition; you no longer want for it anymore as you now possess "it".

So then the dog chasing its tail continues...

So... Which is the front runner?

For me personally? I would say newer 911 turbo. Even if you can go significantly faster building a GTR it won't ever feel like an upgrade or a "better" car. Sure it will be faster.

Faster like a 454 blown Chevy Nova vs a Ferrari.

Its a new toy which cures your itch for a few months as you mod it. Then in 20 or so months we get to do this all over again...

Ok that's maybe just a description of me. But I can sense the force is strong with this one...

Yea I am off the GTR kick....I was running a liter sport bike down the autobahn and he kept up with me up about 150mph...mad me sad.  I need some MOAR POWER.

The initial boost on the car is great but it tapers of quickly...

The GTR was just the idea of a "cheaper" fast car....but like my wife said, it is still a Nissan

Just do a tune/intake/exhaust on the Porsche and be done with it.

On the flip side I got a ride in Mike's built motor 2013 GTR with upgraded GT28 turbos (877awhp/811awtq on e85/91) and it absolutely rips.  Runs a 10 flat on the low boost setting with 4 cats in 100% smog legal CA form.  Best so far is 9.70's@144 in 95* weather with more boost/timing left to put into it on Toyo R888's.  No turbo lag whatsoever.  The car is super impressive..... did need the transmission built up to Stg1 which is good for 1000awhp or something.  That was around $5K not including R&R.

Mark, see THAT is the kind of stuff that makes the GTR always stick in my head.  9's in a full blown street car with great manners.....and the fact that I could build basically that car in a MY11 for what I could sell my Porsche for...

Yes, that's all good and fun in the short term, but if you think that will have any kind of reasonable durability at that power level, you probably have another thing coming.  A 3.8L V6 making in excess of 1000 crank hp is taking an internal ass whipping no matter what anyone tells you, and if it gets hammered regularly you can expect race car frequency engine servicing at minimum.  And the parts for those aren't cheap by any means.

Then again if you're a baller, go for it.

Although I'm not a fan of these dual-clutch transmissions (yes, I know they shift faster than we will ever be able to shift a proper transmission), I'd pick the 911T with the PDK over the GT-R any day of the week.  It doesn't help that we have ~20 GT-Rs in our parking lot everyday and quite frankly, I'm sick of looking at them.
