Calling it quits- Sell complete or part it out
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:02:33 PM »
Looking for some advice.  I've got a 93base w/ 130K that is 95% complete.  The only thing left is to refill the radiator, mount he battery, install the interior, and install some of random odds and ends.  I drove it about a dozen miles (with the radiator and battery temporarily mounted) before I parked it so its not far from being complete.  It just needs time for the little things; which I don't have.

I cant decide it I should take a week off to finish it or just part it.  It mainly comes down to price.  I haven't been around to see what things are selling for these days,so would like some opinions.  Let me know what you guys think.  I'm not in dire need to sell, I just want a new Cayman and the wife said I have too many cars.  I'm also going to part my NA 20b RX7 build as well, but I don't think many people here would be interested in that.

Realistically I think I could part it out rather quickly and still get close to 20K since I have a lot of stock parts to make a nice stock roller with new paint.

93 base w/ 130k
Repainted a custom blue (not a cheap repaint.  Materials were just shy of $1,800)

Hinson mounting kit
Wait for me PCM flash and wiring harness
Swaped to black interior
Fresh black leather seats- still have older black ones as well
Repainted interior plastics
GAB/ GC colliers
17 inch Fikse Mach 5s or FM10's
RE Toe links and arms
Mazda speed suspension bushings ($$$)
Widefoot billet sway ba bracket with the V8 extender block

JDM rear seats
Redline
Pioneer TV
Infinity Kappa front speakers
Random Pioneer 6x9 in the rear
A really sweet looking billet battery box that cost $250
Optima red top
Howe radiator with a custom alum shroud and two 12 inch fans
Dakota digital
99 spec front end and lip
New Undertray (99 spec)
New brake ducts (99 spec)
Genuine front turn signals (99 spec)
New fender liners
New windshield and coolant bottles (no longer dingy yellow)

You're so close to having it completed.  You might as well finish the project and enjoy it for a little bit.  If you're still craving a new Cayman then that's when I'd sell the FD.

dibs on the front bumper and lip if you do. probably front sway bar too.

but, i would hate to see another fd get parted out that wasnt wrecked or burnt up. i would seriously consider sitting on it until you can finish it.

It comes down to which will yield a greater return after factoring in my time.  I'm not sure what a clean, but rather vanilla LS1 FD swap goes for.  It seems like the all start in mid twenties, and probably end up selling for rather steep discount on the asking price.  I think I can easliy reach 20K if I part it with little head ache. My guess is it may fetch slightly more whole, but it will take more time, and I'll have to deal with 16 yr old tire kickers & their parents.   I'll go though and itemize the things above and see where I land.

I'm sure there is more, but I forgot about:

Racelogic TC with all the bells and whistles
Custom AC lines/ condenser and drier

Most these are fairly reasonable.  I'm thinking it would be more lucrative/ less of a headache to part it vs sellig as a unfinished project...  Let me know what you think.

Thanks, Mike

With some sticky tires and a performance alignment your FD will bitch slap a new Cayman for about $35K less (after basic options/tax/lic)

http://www.thesupercars.org/porsche/2013-porsche-cayman/

Nobody will pay $6K for an LS1/T56 combo IMO.

I have heap big sellers remorse. I've owned all manner of cars since I sold my FD, the STI even put down more power than the FD.... Still wish I would have kept it.

I don't have the time/cash on hand to build another one.

A 2014 has a ton of convenience & safety features that a 1993 car does not...  As a track car buying a Cayman and selling the FD makes no sense.  As a daily driver it does (not much, but some).

Looks like a 200+ pullout ranges form $3,500 - $4,700 on ebay.  Hopefully I can fetch a little more with the new clutch, PCM and stand alone harness.  $5k still too high?

I'm going to take pictures and post up a for sale thread in the next few weeks.  Once either the pull out or the roller is sold I'll start with all the little things.

The price on your engine/trans combo seems very high.
