Might be one on Ls1Howto.com? I know I saw something recently when I was looking for cam and head swap info.

You need the special plastic installation sleeve to go over the crank

You have it installed on the back cover correctly.  The concave side should be facing the inside of the motor.  Rub a tiny bit of lube on the rubber lip to help prevent rolling the lip when you slide it on.  You may have to work it on as its a pretty tight seal.  I used no special tools and actually installed mine when the back cover was still bolted to the motor.

No lube, no oil, no nothing.  It must go on dry.

What will the seal look like once it's on the cover around the crank . Will the seal go outwards or in ?

Should look the same as it does out of the car.    Don't roll the lip.

So why must it go on dry?  The GM service manual lists that it should, but is there any reason?  I installed mine the same way I install them on every other car Ive ever worked on - dry on the OD and with a bit of grease on the ID.  Haven't had a single drop of oil come out of it.

I wondered that too but I didn't want to be the guy to find out.

It will backfire sometime for you. Guaranteed

On the web

"seal being installed dry on the shaft is because there is a little Teflon material on the surface of the actual rubber seal. During the initial start-up after the installation, some of the Teflon is transferred to the surface of the shaft. The Teflon IS the lubricant for the seal/shaft interface. If the shaft/seal is oiled on install, it interferes with the transfer of the Teflon and results in a less than optimal setting of the seal. As such, the seal will leak."
