LS1 BMW resale value?
« on: December 27, 2012, 11:21:57 AM »
I know there are a few BMW enthusiasts on here so i figured i would ask. What is the going value for a LS1/T56 swapped 99 328is coupe?

The reason i am asking is because i have a LS1/T56 pullout and i found a clean 99 328is with black leather for almost nothing. I am thinking about picking it up and swapping the ls1 in along with a t4 76-78mm turbo to use as a daily driver. I usually get bored with cars withing a year or so of driving them and do not want to take a hit on the resale.

If you have the pullout already that will help, but don't expect to make a profit. Youll be lucky to break even on the swap, car and cost of pullout.

Do it!  If you take a hit ... call it your accumulated monthly note!

Best case is probably break even.   Remember, with a used E36, assume it needs all new suspension because, well, odds are excellent that it does.

Do the swap with a 4 door.  I like the 4 door M3's and the Ls1 in that would be sweet.

But overall you would probably break even with the swap.

It is worth noting that some guys (like Shakenbake) DO make money building swap cars, but I think he's got some kind of find good deals voodoo or something.   If the E36 is cheap enough and in good enough shape, you might be able to make a couple grand on the swap, maybe a little more if you do a VERY good job.

I am really leaning towards this swap. I will be in at under $2K for the car and the LS1/t56 pullout. I have already done multiple ls1 swaps and do not see having a whole lot in this build. Here is a picture of said BMW i am thinking about.

Roller looks nice......but because it is not an M car it will hurt your resale. I bought a 97 4 door M3 with low miles for $5500 in perfect running condition. I sold the S52 swap for $2500 so I  had $3k in a M3 roller.

If you do it right here is what you will spend.....

Samberg or Vorshlag kit with headers.    $3500 (For resale it helps to use an established swap parts company)
Brake line relocation                               $200
Radiator                                                 $300
M3 3.91 LSD rear diff                             $400
AAW diff brace                                       $265
Suspension                                            $500-1000
Custom exhaust                                    $300-1000
Wiring harness                                       $200-1000
Misc swap parts, fluids, hoses ect.           $500

So figure $6000-$9000 for all of your swap needs. With only having $2k in the rest of your setup joy should be able to make some $$. My guess is that it would bring in $15-18k in resale if everything is well documented and no corners cut. Getting the AC and PS working will help a lot. Good luck with your project and feel free to contact me if you have any questions along the way. I can't express enough how much I love My LS3 M3 even after owning a few very nice LSx FD's

Damn you.  I like the 4 door M3's a lot, and would like to get a swapped one in the near future.

shakenbake's car is BAD ASS.   It's a surreal feeling to haul massive ass while riding in the BACK SEAT of a 4 DOOR CAR.  LOL.

Thanks Blake. I feel the need to make it faster this winter. What is wrong with me? I know it is perfectly fine the way it is but can't stop looking at power adders.
