My 1jz VVTI swap, 94 FD rx7 street car
« on: December 08, 2012, 01:34:17 PM »
Little bit of a background story first (long winded, feel free to skip!):

I had a 95 supra for the last 6 years or so I did a lot of work to. Single turbo blah blah, you may have seen my holset he351ve (variable geometry turbo) build recently.

A few months ago I was driving to work in wet conditions (my daily miata was busy taking on a t25 turbo) and some pulled in front of me, as in they didn't stop at all :(

Long story short, car was totaled, insurance paid out nicely and I had some money to play.

I looked all around for another supra and almost bought one. Hard to find what I wanted (white hardtop)...

I just bought my first house in December 2011 so I had some bills to pay and wanted to do some upgrades so I made the financially responsible decision to pay all my debts and put about 10k in the house... new floors, tile etc... VERY happy wife (best upgrade ever)

So that left me with 15k to play. Not enough for a supra like I had so I decided to move over to a FD rx7

Picked her up from the bay area. Ran perfectly! Pretty fast too, very fun car even mostly stock. The previous owner had $15k in receipts! This included a complete engine overhaul with 3mm apex seals and a street port. $9800 bill on that alone!

Heres a pic of when i first got it:

I drove it around for a few months, knowing I was going to eventually swap the engine. The rotary is cool and all, but 15 mpg is not. Neither is the constant fear of something going wrong, the annoying waiting when warming up, no low end torque etc.

I was considering the ls1 swap, toyota v8s, even the 4g63 was a serious contender.

I've done a few swaps already, a few v6 mr2s, 1jz fc rx7, 1jz datsun 280z, 2jz 260z, recently a 4age 20v on my friends 87 mr2, custom turbo setup on my miata, and of course the na -> tt -> single swap on my old supra.

I really love the toyota JZ family and have always been interested in doing a swap with VVTI! If I had picked up another supra I would have certainly done a 2jz vvti

The vvti 1jz is the lightest of the jz motors and also quite a bit shorter than the 2jz. The VVTI and factory single turbo spool VERY fast (full torque at 2400 rpm) and get great gas millage.

So I ordered the engine from nagano USA (very good seller in my experience) Usually I would have bought it from my local guy (Venus Automotive) but he didn't have any with the manual r154 transmission.

Here's the progress so far:

Yes, it clears the stock hood (this was very important to me!) but just! Lowered the steering rack about 1/2 inch. Using the samberg bump steer correction kit.

More to come.

Mounted the intercooler, made a radiator and AC condenser support too. Trans mount done too

I'll probably start working on the intercooler piping today

This weekend:

Made AC lines and wired it up

Wired up reverse lamps

Adjusted exhaust for better clearance and added a stainless resonator

Started to make a air box / heat shield. Using k&n ru-5111 filter works great

Bypassed stock FD fuel pump resistor (makes engine lean at full throttle!)

Clean it up a little. Just need my big koyo radiator now!

Coilovers in! Ride is great, very smooth. Handles much better than with the racing beat springs I had on the same koni shocks (came with car)

The best budget coilover system is almost surely koni yellows with a threaded spring perch. The ride is very good and comfy over rough roads. Running 500 front 400 rears, may change the rates in the future. about 1/2 stiff rear, 2/3 stiff front. Two finger gap all around ... i'll do corner weighing in the future to perfect the setup.

They took about an hour to make with the available parts I have a work and our lathe. Konis came with the car so I've got under $200 into this setup :D

I work at an audi shop in davis CA called 2Bennett Audimotive. We build coilovers for just about any audi and VW. All of the parts are top quality and made in the USA. Literally the nicest threaded sleeves, split lock rings, adapter seats, springs of many lengths and rates.

Fan upgrade today. Stock toyota celica fans worked okay, but I wanted some additional clearance and some serious cooling power!

2 spal 12inch fans 1320 cfm each!

couldn't find an off the shelve fan shroud for my 94-99 celica radiator so I made one. Simple right? Darn thing took 4 hours to make! The circles for the fans are HAND CUT. I love my thermal dynamics plasma cutter but I really need the circle kit. :)

Results are great. Fan cycle for less than half the time! Idle dip is LESS than stock fans, thanks to the smooth start of the spals! AC is a bit cooler faster thanks to the additional airflow. Should have no issue in the Sacramento heat!

Painted and mounted

Hells yeah!

Be careful.

Just because you use fancy electric fans, doesn't mean you're providing the necessary CFM's to properly cool a 2JZ.

My shop actually told me I need something like 3,300+ CFM, which is also what this web-site suggests.

4 causes of 2jz-gte engine overheating, and some coolant boiling issues - Solid Thinking

On my 2JZ setup, I think we're going with some Porsche dual electric fans + shroud that pump something like 3,600 CFM's...I forget.

No issues in 106* Sacramento heat, AC on full blast (which is ice cold btw!) and back to back pulls doing road tuning.

I just don't have any more room for additional PULLER fans with the current setup. I do have a single spal pusher fan on the AC condenser that does 500 cfm also.

I could probably setup some pushers on the radiator if I need to improve it, but it's not had any issues at this time.

I'm considering adding the Spal fan controller to make the operation a little smoother. Right now I have them just running of a stock toyota fan switch and stock rx7 fan relays, with an interrupt for the AC (default open, open on fan circuit)

 (SPAL USA)

Another note, once you are over 40-50mph proper air flow to the radiator and ducting should be a lot more important. This is difficult with a large front mount and ac condenser in front of the radiator though. If I was building a road racing only car I'd probably try to do a sidemount

Well I blew the stock turbo so I've been working on fitting a new unit. It's a Borg Warner EFR 7064.

Need to make some things better, especially the intake. Love the turbo though, the car is MUCH faster at 12 psi than at any boost the stock turbo could make. It spools a little slower, but doesn't feel laggy at all VS big turbo cars. Very fun to drive and responsive. Bought the turbo from Full Race. They are awesome and really hooked me up!

Some pics... Sorry the cam quality. I'll be reworking some parts of the setup and hopefully hit the dyno and see what the turbo will do at 20+ psi

Here is my first attempt at a trac delete throttle :D

I'm slowly getting better at welding aluminum

Currently working on swapping the 7064 (selling to a friend) to a 7670 efr unit.

Waiting on parts to complete ....

I hope you guys like my project. I somehow forgot to post it here so I copied the most relevant parts from other forums.

I've done a few other swaps in the past... lots of v6 mr2s, 1jz FC rx7, 1jz and 2jz datsuns etc

Finally getting better at fabricating parts and welding. Still a long way to go before my stuff looks as good as most of the guys on this forum.

Cool beans swap! I've always been a fan of the well done 2JZ/1JZ swaps but for some reason I don't see a lot of them getting finished. You should post up the build thread on the 1JZ FC you built too!

Another thought... I wish Samberg would just go ahead and offer an option for a JZ subframe since it seems to be a MUCH better option than the Tech2 subframe!

Oh yeah. I had good luck with Nagano USA too getting a 3rd Gen 3SGTE engine + trans for my bro's mr2. The only thing they messed up on is they lost the 3rd gen MAP sensor which is a high dollar item!

My 1jz vvti came with a broken VVTI solenoid (shipping damage) any they bought me a new one! Great customer service!

Glad you guys like the build. I'll try to find the link to my other builds

No hard data yet, but it will come when I get the new turbo kit together and finish off the tuning on the dyno.

Tuned very conservatively it feels maybe a little shy of ~400whp with the 7064. Shooting for 500s with the 7670
