network guys come on in :)
« on: November 14, 2012, 03:27:06 PM »
Ok i am still pretty new to this and i am working on my own and learning but i have an issue i can't seem to figure out. At my old job on our network we had different sets of IP addresses. One would be for wireless another for printers another for middle school another for high school and so on. I am looking at the ip range that the person before me left and i am running close to running out of ip address.

So i figured make a new scope of ip address for the printers. I have a lot of printers and it would help me free up about 50 ip address. I also made another scope for wireless. now here is my issue. I have the main scope that is up and running. the wireless scope is up and running but my printer scope is not.

The router on the main scope is 10.1.1.1. the router for the wireless since it has its own router its 10.1.4.1. Now i am setting up this scope for the printers and i am not sure do i need to setup a new router address? or do i use the same router address as the main scope?

does anyone have an good info for me to read so i can learn more about this and vlan setups?

I'd need a diagram of your layout to explain it.  If you can do that I can help you.

There are great videos on YouTube about the basics of network layout that might be a good start on it.

What you are trying to do isn't a VLAN, its just subnetting. Your subnet mask should be the same on all address' and your default gateway should change per "subnet". There isn't enough info to solve or help figure out the problem...

If it's on the same switches, it's VLANs.

yeah i saw some of the videos on youtube about it. I was second guessing my self since i couldn't get the printer scope to work. That is where i am lost. I am not sure how i can explain the layout of my network since i don't know it very well yet. Remember i was thrown in this job and had to start running with it. If you can explain to me what you need to see please let me know

Do you have visio or can you make something and share it via google docs?

A basic layout with the main wiring clearly laid out would help with anyone assisting you.  Devices with model #'s (you mention a wireless router, not 100% certain what it is, etc).  We don't need end devices, just the core pieces of hardware.  Then give us networks and subnet masks for the subnets  (main, wireless, printers, etc).

Shaun,

Step 1.   Figure out your network architecture and understand it well.

If you don't have that, you should not be touching it, let alone making changes.   If it's all just ether to you right now, you may end up making more work for yourself trying to effect change in it.

THEN, worry about splitting things out and messing with it.   As summy said, make a good Visio diagram and make sure you understand it, then we can help you.

Judging by the fact he said he needs to free up 50 IP's for printers I do not think its all off of 1 switch  :punch:

Sounds like a pretty big infrastructure to be working with. Changing the subnets after the network is functioning might have some serious side effects.

Best of luck to you!

50 IP's is not a big infrastructure  ;)

Unless he has a dedicated switch for just printers, I think you can assume there are either VLANs, or an entirely layer 2 infrastructure.   BTW, I said switches, not switch.   I'd hope most people would be separating disparate networks that cross the same bridges with VLANs.   ;)

And yes, 50 printers is not a big infrastructure.  We have ~40k copper and ~10k fiber switch ports in my current infrastucture, easily 1000+ printers.   That's a somewhat large infrastructure, but I'd still consider us relatively small overall.

the way things are going here i have no idea when i am going to get the chance to look at my setup here. all i know is that yesterday i couldn't figure out why my wireless access point didn't work in one building come to find out the guys over the summer just plugged anything they wanted to what ever they wanted and the wireless needed to go to POE. I found those and fixed that so that is a big relief. man i thought this was going to be simple to do. i really wanted to get this done but i guess its going to take more time than i thought. i have a lot of ready to get done i guess and a lot to learn before i mess with it. All i know is now the wireless vlan is working and so is the one vlan that is setup just can't get the other ip scope to work yet no clue what i am missing

Yeah, it all depends on what you're used to seeing when you mention big/small infrastructure.  I deal with ~8500 separate locations nationwide that each have 10+ printers (guessing, honestly can't track it).  I'd like to think it's one of the larger retail networks in the USA, but I have no way of verifying that.  Opening up 50 IP's is a simple /26 chunk out of that 10.x.x.x anyways
