Daily Driver FC Swap?
« on: August 22, 2012, 10:14:11 PM »
Hey, so I'm planning on getting a FC as my daily driver and I wanted to know what would be a perfect engine (non rotor of course) to put into it.
As of now I really want to put in a 2.3 L MZR DISI out of a 2007 MazdaSpeed6 (270 hp / 200 kW) just because I can get an avg of 22mpg and still be able to put out that kinda power, plus it'll still be a Mazda engine so it'll look legit. I'm not too experienced in engine swaps but if anyone had the knowledge, I'd like to know if that engine would be able to fit into a FC and what kinda work I'd have to put into it. I know for a fact that the MZR engine supports the FWD and AWD platforms for the MazdaSpeed3 and 6 but could I position it for RWD?
+ ?
Any feedback is kindly appreciated!
Thanks!

FWIW, I would sure as shit hope that you can get >22 mpg combined with that engine, since a stock LS1 will do better than that in an RX7.

Beyond that, it looks difficult to fit by the pan design, but you can sure give it a try.   Make sure you have lots of time, money and skill, or just lots of time and money to pay someone else to figure it out.   That's direct injection, right?   Gonna have to figure out a fuel system.

Looks pie in the sky to me, but good luck if you go through with it.

So you dont want an LSx engine why...?  Good luck figuring out all of your fabrication and wiring...or you could just get an LS engine and have all the parts and info at your disposal.

My fc with a 5.3 gets 24-26 highway with a horrible overdrive and stock 4.10 diff at 70 mph, my 04 GTO weighs 4000 lbs, has a supercharger making 500 rwhp and it gets 22 mpg city and 29-30 at 70 mph.

As much as I appreciate being different and unique ideas, it is really hard to beat any gen3/4 v8 in any car with its reliability, power potential, cost, ease of repair and efficiency.

Honestly I would get a L33 5.3 aluminum block. Leave it stock and mate it with a t56 6speed trans. You would have less money in that combo than almost any other... You would get 22-30 mpg depending on your style of driving.  And as a plus it would be faster than most mustangs and be a blast to drive...

I was on this track for a while with a 425RWHP LS1 plan and a T56 out of stuff I got laying around.  Hell I might still do it if my truck shits here.  LM7/T56 FC stock everything other then suspension on the car and I would drive it all day and get 25+ MPG.

What about a Miata engine? I know the LS1 and the SR20s are a common swap but I thought I'd do something a bit different, and plus it'd be awesome if the engine I swap it with is a Mazda engine (even though they're not the best).

A miata engine FC isn't a great idea IMO, it'd be heavier and have a worse suspension design, but it would look better and you wouldn't have to turn in your man card.

an SR seems like it would be a decent lightweight 4cyl option.
