restoring mazda hardware
« on: August 16, 2012, 03:36:23 PM »
I dont know about you guys but I have seen the prices for OEM hardware from mazda.  Also some of the larger bolts they just buy from a hardware store and its not the same.

has anyone looked into how to restore the coatings on the hardware?  I have blasted and painted the bolts but here at the beach they still rust, I had really nice looking under side of the FD when I started and now its all back the way it was.  I had thought you could anodize it but I was wrong you cant to that to steel.  So who knows what to do here?

Anyone know what the factory coating is on the bolts?  I'm looking for something like that, that can be done to the threads and everything without effecting the threads.

Zinc coating/plating was what I was going to do.

That will do it. They will look shiny, gold and new.

Zinc always looked bad like it was a lag bolt to some kids fort lol.

What about Cadmium plating?

Isn't what you are building just a really fast fort anyway?

Cadmium would certainly work.

I have used model paints with relatively good success. And after you install the bolt it's easy to touch up. Mostly black or clear though.
