Has anyone made 'low' fixed seat brackets for stock FD seats?
« on: August 03, 2012, 10:49:07 AM »
I'm one of those guys building a car I've never driven in, so... I'm quickly finding out how small the FD's interior is when everything is installed. Specifically, I'm not a big fan of how high I sit because I look down on the gauge cluster instead of into it. I'm 6'2" so I'm not scrubbing my head on the headliner, but I definitely brush it. The cluster angle is the biggest deal for me. Long story short I'm curious to see if anyone has fabbed up seat brackets that put the OEM seats on the floor. I would be willing to give up adjustability, but I'd really love to get a 1" drop or so if possible. Anyone fabbed up anything like this? If so would you be willing to make a driver's side bracket for me?

Im 6.0 and with a helmet on for racing I have to sit lower in the seat...this option would be nice for sure!  Have you thought about throwing in spacers in between the bolt up locations for the steering shaft?  It will drop a little but then you have to worry about leg room.

I've been wondering this as well, but I'd prefer to have lower seat brackets that maintain the adjustability.  I know there's not much room under there, but I'm sure someone has made something.

I don't know how much lower you'd be able to go with the stock seats, and I'm not sure I'd spend much time/money making a bracket to save 1/4".  Aftermarket seats can be more comfortable, and definitely have more mounting options.

Atomic Rex makes a set of fixed seat brackets that can be installed very low, but they aren't cheap.

Probably will only get about an inch lower. The bottom of the seat buckets are very close to the carpet.
FC/FD plug and play wiring harnesses, LSx swap AC systems, LSx swap power steering lines.

Over the last 15 years I have tried a couple different ways to improve the seating position for the taller guys like myself.  At the same time I did not want to reduce the streeability of the seats.

The factory seats dip down between the rails, and you would be hard pressed to lower them an inch without removing carpet, and you would need to go fixed mounting for a result anywhere near 1 inch.  you also may need to remove padding from the carpet material.  What I found was the problem with the factory seats is that they V up on the bolsters a great deal, keeping anyone with larger than a 30" waist from sitting as low as possible in them.  My thighs in particular would get undue pressure, and make my R foot fall asleep with the factory R1 seats.

I did get about 1 to 1.5 inches when I got some sparco torino 2 knockoff seats from eBay years ago.  I adapted them to the factory rails with steel plates, and they served me well for 5 years in the FD and I still use them today in my van.

BEST solution - you don't want to know.   :(

but you decided to read anyway...  The factory RZ seats are amazing.  guys with a 34-38" waist fit VERY well, and they drop the factory seating position about 2 inches with the factory rails.  They do this by minimizing the seat shell, and therefore making more space where the factory seats have plastic framework.
problem is they cost a mint for a used seat, and it is tougher to get the factory rails (ask lane change).

Ronin has considered making them since Recaro has stated they will not, but that sort of a project brings huge costs, and liability as considerations.
absolute power corrupts absolutely  :yay:
93 FD widebody - destroked
69 Suburban - positive manifold pressure
72 Blazer - 6.0, 6speed 4wd
65 Impala - 5.7
59 cad  - 5.3
53 spartan - crash pad status

Thanks for the info guys. I knew the seat bottoms were close to the floor pan but I didn't realize how close. I'd love a pair of RZ seats but I doubt that is in the cards. I think I'll just save my money, buy a set of atomic rex mounts and try and figure out what the most functional / comfortable / affordable / daily driveable aftermarket seats for me would be.
