Dss pro kit vs standard
« on: May 26, 2012, 07:27:02 PM »
Any one have any real world data on the strength of the standard 8.8 dss axle bars vs the pro kit?
Has anyone broken the standard kit or any of the parts it does not replace?
Can the standard kit be upgraded to the pro kit at a later date or are the bars different?
how fast has the standard kit been (60' times)?

Wrong section, restarted in the drive train section, Mods please erase

I believe that Demon is running the standard kit and has cut some 1.4x 60' times and ran a 9 second pass @134mph all motor 393ci stroker LS1 6spd manual in an FD.

I haven't heard of anyone breaking the standard kit yet.

The pro kit comes with 33 spline outer hubs and the Porsche Turbo style inner 31 spline 2 piece CVs (to replace stock Cobra inners)

As gnx7 posted, my best 60' is a 1.395 with a HARD clutch dump from 7700rpm 6spd 520whp motor. I haven't seen any stress shown on the parts themselves and I've easily done 150 launches. One thing I do that most don't is that I preload the driveline pretty hard before launch to help save it from breaking.

Can you explain the preloading hard thing?

Letting the clutch out a bit at the tree and slipping it while holding the brake I'd imagine. Preloading the driveline greatly reduces the initial shock of dumping the clutch. You have to have a clutch that withstands being slipped though.

In my WRX I used to get to the line, pull the ebrake, and let the clutch out just enough to drag the RPM down a tiny bit.  It always spun a ton anyway so who knows if it helped.  :)

I also have the standard DSS kit.  If they can take a 7700rpm clutch drop WITH TRACTION then I'm sure they will work from my street-tire car.

If you are on  bias ply slicks there is no at all need to preload. This is coming from a guy who cuts 1.4x consistantly on a t56

Coming from a guy cutting 1.3's on bias plys and a t56, you absolutely need to preload.
