You may want to look at anodizing.  It's tougher than powder, and may be cheaper as well.

Yeah, but I got a powder coating setup in my shop.  8)

this random weather sucks...60 degrees one day 20 the next.   Kind of hard to tune the new motor.

Been chasing a oil leak and it looks like the damn valve cover is leaking around the DOHC cam caps.    Hopefully it's fixed soon.   Son wants to hit some car and coffee's with his 944 and the RX7.   Can't wait for a little father/son cruising.

Sounds like fun (cruising, not oil leaks).

Tool of the week. Who needs the $60 mitsu tool when you have a lathe and a $6 autozone socket. I guess I should have made this when I built the motor...would have saved me a bunch of wasted time chasing the oil leak

Finally got smart and bought some oil dye and a UV light.   Not sure why i've never used that stuff before but took a whole 5 min to find the leak.    Had to take the timing belt and oil pump pulley to get to that nut tight.   A couple test drives later and its time to retune for higher boost.

Popped a head gasket again today out putting miles on the car.   I pressure checked each cylinder on Betty...this time it pushed the head gasket out on cylinder 1 so I guess the head doesn't have a problem around cylinder 4 where it let go before. I cant believe its lifting the head at 17 psi....its got higher compression pistons (8.3:1) , so the cyl pressure could be higher at 17 but hell the old motor ran 35psi.

Took the head to the machine shop last week.   He confirmed it looked like detonation eroded the head and got past the fire ring.   Hopefully there's enough surface left to machine.

Ooof, no apparent signs of detonation while it was running though?   Weird.

So an update.

Machine shop decked the head but the erosion was past the fire ring so it was junked.   Started looking for yet another head and could find anything.   Pulled my old head of the shelf (from when the piston land broke over 2 yrs ago), it was past it's service height but still checked flat with my Ground Straight Edge.   So said hell with it and bolted it on and sent it!   LOL

Took a bunch of timing out of the tune, back the boost down to 16 psi and have been driving it for the past month.

The plan was to take it to some car shows with the kids 944...but he fell asleep on the way to work and put it into a guard rail.   So we been doing Cars and Coffee in the RX7 while we fix his.

It's nice have another driver to be able to tune the car though.   He drives, and I run the laptop.   Alot quicker process.   LOL

Glad he's ok! could have been a lot worse.  And tuning with 2 people is way easy.
