95 vr Fd ls3 swap
« on: April 08, 2012, 03:57:47 PM »
Well some of know me on here, I built this BB 93 ls3 fd a while back. Well a few weeks ago I got in a pretty bad accident in it, went through a wet spot with a little too much load in 4th, long story short went off the road and rolled two or three times. Good news is I didn't get hurt and didnt hit anyone. Bad news totaled car and my phone was dead so I had to walk a few miles all bloody before I could get help.

link to old build thread: http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=5097.0

So after 7 years of owning that car, I am moving on to a new project. I thought for a while since I was starting all over what car do I want, I can pick anything(within reason). Well I found nothing that I loved like the fd, so I started just glancing in for sale threads for fd's. I found a guy local who had found a auto 95 fd with 30k on it that had been sitting for ten years on a farm. Story goes the owner passed away and the car was willed to his grandparents. Went and checked the car out, it wasn't perfect but had potential. I ended up driving it home, oh yeah the motor ran fine after ten years of sitting pretty crazy...

Here is what it started like, lol if you do the math this thing stopped running around the first Fast and Furious movie. This may have actually been Dominic Torretto's car! jk

I instantly started pulling off the body kit and found all this glue. I started to take it off but it is taking the paint with it :(

I had a friend that blew his rotary on the dyno so I ended up selling him the one in this. So the ls3 out of the wrecked fd is going in. I enjoyed the swap last time and there are things I am going to go about differently this time but I do hope to be finished by summer. I will update as I go on with this project, car is going to be getting painted. I am debating on keeping it red or doing the mazda blue found on the later fd's.

Hated to hear that you totaled the BB FD.  I always wished the exterior of mine was as clean as yours. Glad to hear that you decide to find another FD to swap everything over to.

Sad to hear the news of the other FD, but it's great that you are forging ahead on another build.  Good on you.

I'm sure that this build will be just as fun for you to do and I'm sure there will be upgrades from your last build. In my opinion on colors, Montego Blue > Red. Can't wait to see more updates on your build.

Hey Adam, I already took them off. I prefer the stock body lines.

Yeah, I am going to do a couple things differently. The last build I removed tons of stuff, washer tank, air bags and wiring ect. This time I am considering ac, sound deadening.

The blue I was referring to was the one found on the 99 spec in japan. I like montego too, I just feel that color is dated to the 90's. I decided to keep the color oem vr red anyways.

I should be done in about a month to two months  8)

Wow horrible to hear!  Glad you're OK, and the LS3's ok :)

It's a great feeling to have done something before, and now have an opportunity to do it again with all the experience you gained.  Hopefully insurance took care of you?

Thanks, yes I was very lucky.

Yeah it's kinda cool to have the opportunity but I feel like I just keep adding things  :D.

I was very nervous at first with insurance since I had a v8 in the car, I thought they would try to use that as an excuse but insurance was actually very pleasant to work with, although they did hit me at 16k at first but then offered to get it independently appraised. Had it appraised and came back at 23,500 with a buy back of 1550 for the wrecked one. Unfortunately I have a wife that insisted all the money not go back into the car  :(, still cant complain though.

Update, I decided to strip the whole car down and apply the lizard skin sound deadening and ceramic heat shield inside the car. Here are a couple pics so far not all the way done yet. My wife and friends who have seen the car before I started are kinda wondering what I am doing, like I am crazy....kinda looks that way now compared to the pic my wife took the first day I got it home.
