Ditch the McLeod. I used to run that clutch (details in my build thread) and the engagement window is just odd. It was ok but I was never really happy with it. McLeod does sell a good twin but it's the full fingered style not the long style three finger.

0.02 from someone who's been there.

You're the only person I'v seen who didn't like the Mcleod.

You arent looking very hard. I partially share Joel's sentiment. The clutch performs ok, but I feel that other full finger twin discs are more forgiving and more consistent.  That said, there are people with bad things to say about EVERY clutch on the market. Talking about clutches is almost like talking about  politics.

Excuse Mefarri, he doesn't know what he's talking about. I've heard the 3 finger twin disc is iffy, but the full finger McLeods, like I have, is absolutely the best clutch on the planet.

I guess the only people I've seen with Mcleods have the full finger ones.  Doesn't mean that I hadn't heard of anyone not liking them.

Quoting myself to emphasize the line that matters.

The full fingered is supposed to be great (agreed).  Not nearly as many people have played with the three finger version (AndrewB70 was one, he repeatedly told me to "ditch the truck clutch"), BUT now you've heard of folks not liking all McLeod twins.

My beef with the three fingered version is that it has almost all of it's disengagement in the first 1/4" of pedal throw.  There's no over centering action on the stroke so the pedal pressure just rises steadily while the grab just falls off FAST after after any pedal movement.

It's like as you step down engagement goes:
100%  30% 20% 15% 10% 5% 0% over the course of the throw

vs. a typical clutch which would be more like:
100% 100% 80% 50% 30% 10% 0%

Modulation changes dramatically depending whether you're on the power or not and it's just a weird odd ball clutch.  You breath on the pedal and it loses a huge portion of it's grabbing power.  Oh and mine was still running the organic material and liked killing slave cylinders.  To the OP, if you can, call McLeod and see if you can exchange for the more modern version.

You've got a great start on a killer car.  Don't sell yourself short on the clutch.  It's something you'll interact with every day you drive it so it's worth getting right.

The pedal in my FD is the BEST feeling clutch I have ever felt. It is so easy to slip, dump hard, and predict. I'd bet you had an issue within the slave itself.

Slave was brand new when I put it in so I don't think that's likely.  With a long style clutch you're compressing coil springs using the three fingers as levers.  As soon as you get motion of the levers there's really no clamp left on the friction disk(s).  It's almost just pedal pressure you have to use to modulate rather than travel.  With the diaphragm version (which I've been incorrectly calling full fingered) the whole thing, fingers included, is a conical spring.  The diaphragm is what gives 99% of clutches the over center feel everyone is used to and the motion of the fingers starts without a complete loss of friction plate clamping due to the geometry of the spring.

Pics of the difference here.

To the OP, apologies for the massive thread tangent.  However, you ARE well on your way to awesomeness and I DO think you'd be much happier with the diaphragm derived McLeod twin! Good luck!

Thanks frijolee... and no worries, I appreciate everyones input.. too bad I now gotta do some homework on this clutch.

So, I just had a chance to read through a couple of reviews on Mcleod's St. B&B Twin Disc and it seems to me that people either love them or hate them.. I called RPM to see what clutch, master, and slave, they recommend for my hp goal.. Jeremy advised going with the Mcleod RXT, Tilton Master, and one of MCleod's adjustable slave cylinders... I called Mcleod and left a VM. We'll see what they say when they call back.

Demon - are you running the RXT?

thanks

Jose

I had heard this car was being sold/parted out.  I'm glad to see the new owner taking it even further!

I'm interested to see your final racepak installation.  I've got a similar cluster and haven't really put a ton of thought into mounting it yet.  (Actually, just the other day a tripped over the cluster cover/gauge hood in my garage and smashed ever tab to pieces, so maybe I should start by finding a new one...)

Stupid question but for those that are running the McLeod RXT clutch, what flywheel are you using with them?
