From the trainning I'm doing the Gen IV is here to stay for a little bit longer.  It may get more improvments but I dont see boost as one.  I see them all going direct injection first.

Why would GM go to a more expensive engine making similar power with less reliability?    I don't often hear people raving about their reliable Ferraris, or the low cost of ownership on their new Lamborghini.    Porsche isn't much better than Corvette on fuel milage either.     It takes xxx cfm to make xxx HP and that means you need xxx amount of fuel.   Doesn't matter how you get there, your overall fuel usage is going to be similar and GM's current motors are awfully efficient, VE wise.     I might believe a 5.0L with turbos, based on direct injected GenIV stuff, but 10k RPM?    Come on now.  ;)

The author may not be that off.  It's no secret GM has wanted to take the Corvette to a midengine platform.  The proposed power train wouldn't be that difficult.  Siamese a couple ecotec's, add direct injection, and a small turbo......

Now 10K rpm, maybe not, but 8+K seems run of the mill these days.

Didn't GM play with the idea of turboing the blue devil during testing but finally nixed the idea cuz a couple burned to the ground?

^THIS!  Ohhh my God please this.  An Ecotec based V8 would be a bad mother fucker if they could make a strong enough crankshaft.

Always thought a camless motor would be neat if you were able to make it reliable.   meaning each valve has its out actulator that pushes it open and shuts it.   and its controlled by the tune.   Then on the fly you could have a .400 lift cam or a .600 lift cam in a matter of seconds, program the rate it stays open etc..  multiple tunes in one controller depending how your driving it will change in a matter of a milisecond.      think about it a nice fuel efficient cam style for cruise control and highway trips, but a full on nasty cam profile for when at the strip or you just feel like getting on it, and it can change almost instantly by the high tech computer to control it all..   

timing, fuel, air, spark, and cam profile all on the fly..   thats sweet..  least I think.

There have been leaks about this for quite a while. They have apparently been developing this small displacement turbo motor since the early 2000's. There is a LONG thread about this new vette on supra forums. They have said several times they want to move the corvette to be direct competition with the Ferrari's and Lambo's, and they feel they need an exotic motor to do that. Think more along the lines of the F40, twin turbo, small V8, mid engine. 8)
