There is no chance in hell that phone ever worked as they say.   I'd be pretty shocked if Barris had anything to do with the TV, also.

That may be the physical car, but some jackass in a trailer park did the interior.
the transmitter for that phone would probably take up the whole trunk area and weigh a shitload, lol,,i just watched corvette summer the other day and that was a legit custom vette

Oh, I believe the phone/interior were factory, I just don't think (I hope) Barris had anything to do with them.

I'd bet the phone was a gimmick.   Getting that to work well back then, good luck.

There's an episode of "CHiPs" where an old dude in a limo had a cell phone back then.  They were around.

Unless it was in the early 80s, it wasn't a cell phone.     The first cellular networks were in the early 80s, and they were spotty to say the least.

It could have been a high powered radio connected up to the phone, we've had that for a long time.    That would fall back under my previous statement of saying the phone was a gimmick though.    ;)

It was early 80's.  I've got the fist 2 seasons ('78-'80) on DVD and it's not on one of those episodes.

Gotcha.    I was going to say, the first commercial cell network in the US was in '83.    They were pretty much backpack phones through most of that time.   BIG radios and BIGGER batteries.   LOL.

early car-phones .ne. cellphones.

I had a friend who had a Car Phone in his new '83 Vette.  I remember it had a coil cord connecting it to the rest of the unit in/under/behind the dash (or somewhere, I don't remember, there was a lot of smoke involved...)

There were no cellular (roaming switchable wireless) networks prior to '83 though, and not much then.   So most wireless devices then were just amped up shortband/CB stuff, which is always pretty limited in it's range.    That or INSANELY (even for Farrah) expensive stuff.    Cell phones may not give you cancer, but holy cow, the power needed for good range on some of those things would creep me out.

I guess it's pretty pedantic though.   The phone may have worked in certain areas, with limited functionality, but it wouldn't have been a "portable phone" in the way we think of it now.

The TV is pimptacular.   You know Huggy Bear would have wanted one of those.
