De-cambered front ball joints
« on: August 24, 2021, 12:39:31 PM »
New question, does anyone sell a de-cambered front ball joint for the FC chassis?  I have brand new FA 500 coil-overs on my car and can only get 1.5 degrees negative camber on the front wheels with the CO tops 80 to 100% tipped in to the sheet metal openings. To get 1.5 degrees on the passenger side I had to loosen the 4 stubborn nuts holding the subframe and the strut tension pulled it slightly that way. This gained me almost 1 degree more on the passenger side and I lost roughly the same amount on the drivers side as the spindle angles changed slightly. I would like to have more camber adjustment range for future track events. Not really interested in cutting up the towers but I am thinking about elongating the two holes in the ball joint mounting bracket. Expecting an answer from LOF on this question. DP

What do you mean by de-cambered? You're trying to increase front camber, correct? There are a few manufacturers selling extended lower ball joints for drifting, but they're usually pretty extreme.
You could also slot the upper strut bolt hole and change the angle of the strut to the knuckle and gain some camber there. Some manufacturers of coilovers already have this top hole slotted.

The top holes on the FA 500 struts are all ready slotted. I can open up the slot but eventually the strut ears interfere with the spindle.
My reference is the extended lower ball joints offered for NA Miata's, they add negative camber to the front geometry and some were called de-cambered. DP

A few different people sell extended lower ball joints for the FC. Here are a few (some not advertised separately, but could probably be purchased).

Thanks Shainiac but that is all a bit more extreme than I need for my car.  DP

Yeah, it seems like the market is all geared towards drift cars that want 7*+ of camber for more angle and wheel clearance. Not really sure what your issue is, I've had no issue getting 2.5-3* of camber from adjustable top hats.

Shainiac looking at your strut photo I can see a major difference in the shape of the ears that clamp onto the upright. The FA 500's come with a very angular outline that I did grind down on the bottom to get more rotational clearance. I may need to take off a little more steel so I can get 2 degrees of negative camber.  DP

The photo I sent was a generic one from Google showing the slotted bolts, not FC specific. Have you contacted Fortune Auto and asked them what's up? Does the strut fit well on the knuckle otherwise? All of their setups use the same coilover thread, so it's possible that they may have sent the wrong one and it just so happens to fit.
