After seeing this video when it came out, I liked the idea of having something that weighed next to nothing just to tinker with. Didn't really care for all the wood and household switches, but it is a good concept.

Last week I got to thinking I needed something to put the engine in that had been sitting in the garage for 5 or 6 years now.
The engine is 100k+ mile 5.7 that came out of my dads 96 Z71 pickup. He was sure that the noise that he was hearing was the engine going out, so he had the engine replaced. That noise was still there after he had it replaced...

Anyway I was browzing Craigslist and came upon this RX7 with no engine, but already set up for a small block chevrolet.
I sent him a message wondering if he wanted to trade for a revolver. Turns out. Yes he did. LOL
Here is one of the pictures off Craigslist.

Going to have to do something about the hood.
Anyway Friday after work I loaded up my son and headed off to pick it up.
It was so light, Three of us pushed it up on the trailer.

So the first big problem was the door handles wouldn't work. On either door.
The rear hatch worked just fine and the shocks held it up.
It was a little rainy on the way home, so I climbed through the hatch to roll the window up.

Rolled it off the trailer Saturday in the rain and waited for a break to give it a small bath.

Washed it with simple green and a scrub brush.

Got it in the garage and popped the hood. It wasn't even bolted to the hinges... :yay:

Need to do some cleaning here also.

The interior is beyond nasty.

Got the driver side door latch working again. It just needed some lubrication and finesse.
The passenger door latch is another story. Apparently someone else didn't figure out it needed lube and looks like they used the hammer method of trying to get it to work. I'll have to figure out a way to get the latch open to replace it.

Pulled both seats out, the carpet, the shifter and some of the insulation last night.
I'll get some pictures of that soon.

Not sure what to do with it. Lemons car comes to mind if I can get it together cheap enough. Otherwise I'll gather some parts together as cheap as I can
and have some fun with it.

The 68 special name comes from me telling my wife I was going to trade a 38 special for it. With some friends over, she goes to make a joke about trading a 68 special for a car. We got a good laugh out of that.

Thanks! Thought I may have a trade for the SBC on a 4.8, but the guy wasn't interested.

It fits between the Cobra and the Jeep. Glad I don't have to work on it outside.

I've got a lead on a Muncie M22 Rock crusher transmission that will come with clutch, bell housing, shifter and yolk.
Going to go look at it tomorrow morning or Saturday.

Well Friday was a success.
Drove to Powell TN to check out the 4 speed.
Turns out it wasn't an M22, but an M21. Almost the same, but the gears aren't as strong.
Still picked it up because it was a good deal.

Have to take the clutch to get refurbished by a local place.

I also need to find out what hudraulic throw out bearing to use in place of the linkage.

And a bit of cleaning. This was after a whole can of degreaser and scrubbing.
There were chunks of grease coming out of the inside of the bellhousing.

Saturday we were in the garage and my son wanted to wash the RX7. He helped vacuum it out fist though.

It's a little cleaner than it was before.

The engine compartment needed some scrubbing.

It still could use some help.

Next step is picking up my heads for the shortblock that a friend has had for years. I was hoping he was going to port them, but he never got around to it.
Gotta get my cherry picker back from a friend as well, so I can make sure the flywheel will bolt up before taking the clutch setup to get refurbished.
Then I'll start with the wiring and clean all that up.
I have a friend that owns a shop. He is going to start building roll cages. I may let him do some work on this one.

Started removing the wiring harness last night.
Need to find a wiring schematic for it, so I can start removing what is not needed.

Another first gen… and an SA to boot! You lucked out the ones without a moon roof are the lightest.

What’s the goal for the car? Quick street car? 1/4 mile? Road Race?

No sunroof FTW AND more headroom for TALL people like myself. lol  :bacon:

The goal as of right now is just to get it drive-able.
I have different things going through my head.
Thinking just a quick little street car to play around in. We have a lot of mountain roads around here that are fun.

Probably going to leave the engine stock as of now and try to make it quiet. It's not going to be real fast, but fun to drive.
Lower a little bit, put some fender flares on it for wider tires and see how it does in the corners.

It may morph into something else as I go.  :drive:

Haven't posted in a while.

Traded around for a good Holley 650 carb.

My dad picked up some cast manifolds we think will work. Won't know until I get the engine in.
I need to find some small block engine mounts though. Haven't started sourcing those yet.
Still need to pick up the heads...
Got my cherry picker back.
Keeping my eye out for a radiator that will fit.
Oh and a low rise intake.

No pictures cause I haven't done anything. HAHA

Total invested so far.

$300 (what the gun was worth)
Transmission $550
Holley carb $100
Manifolds were $30 but I didn't buy them.  :D
